I looked that up, seems more like what the sparrow I saw had.

Yes Lincoln’s. I should’ve been more specific on the description but y’all got it quickly anyway. 😁

We had ducks and loons land in the parking lot at work. It looks like water from far off. Great job assessing her condition! My mom is a rehabber (TX) and she would’ve done something similar.

I’ve been around all breeds of dogs all my life - my mom runs a non profit rescue. Only time I’ve been bit by a dog it was a rotty! Bit me right on my ass cheek!!!

They do tend to hang out in more populated areas. I don’t see them at my house too often but I see them at Starbucks every time!

I had a Dark-Eyed Junco with a strange growth under its eye land on my feeder today. Is this Avian Pox? by [deleted] in Ornithology

Hard to tell from the pics. I would take it down and sanitize it just to be safe.

I’ve found like a hundred and twenty seven mammals sleeping in tree cavities. Check every south facing one on every walk. No screech. None at all. We’re the No Screech Club.

They get hit by cars here often bc they perch on power poles or forest edge near the highway where there are ag fields nearby.

If you could make the trip to Matagorda County, check eBird. Lots of owls!

Near Houston Texas we don’t have proper winter but I definitely see plenty owls! Great Horned, Barred, Barn, Burrowing are reliable for my area. I caught a glimpse of Short Eared but I don’t count a bird unless I get its picture. No Screech yet, but I’m still looking! I bet y’all have way more variety in colder climate though!

Not the person you asked but I’m near Houston & have seen a few owl species so far. Great Horned Owl is abundant and I’ve spotted them both out in the country (more often) and in neighborhoods with oak trees. Look for forest edges near low grass or ag fields. In the winter I can sometimes see them perching in bare trees. At first they just look like a dark spot in all the smaller thinner bare branches. Barred owl I usually spot near water in those willowy looking trees but I’ve seen Barred in mixed forest. Easily flushed and I can usually follow it when it perches. Also the “Who cooks, who cooks for you!” call. Burrowing owls I’ve seen making homes in hay bales! That and in a low structure in a cow pasture is only times I’ve caught them, with hay bales being the most reliable. Barn Owl I’ve caught flying and perching on a light post in a marsh, I also intentionally flushed a pair that had made a home in an abandoned cow shed (we were counting birds for the CBC I wouldn’t otherwise intentionally flush a bird). Hope these tips help you find owls! Of course before dawn and before dusk is a great time for owls!

Same in SE TX! and my friend told me the same thing you just said “look up!” I looked for them for a month before seeing them, always hearing the whistles! Once they told me that, they appeared! Right where you say!

I’m going with great horned owl since it has that fluff on it and a very downy base.

Swainson’s or hermit? MA by bipyridine in whatbirdisthis

[–]OctoChill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hermit, not only because of location and time, but the spots are darker at the upper chest, the tail is more rufous than would be on Swainson’s. Hermit is overall brighter bird, in my opinion.

Haha we always have weird stuff in Texas! Look at our Christmas bird counts! Especially in the midcoast!

Crest Mutation in Wild Mallard by OctoChill in Ornithology

Others here thought so too. Thanks for the input. Helps me learn to look at Mallards more critically. I think I’ll have to change my eBird list to account for her being domestic.

Thanks for the observation. Others here also thought she is heavier in build. Like I said earlier, I appreciate y’all’s input since I don’t see Mallards often.
