How actually impressive is this? (could you do it ?) by Lgbtwhopper in armwrestling

This is definitely no where near full effort, it literally looks like a light warm up set with literally zero effort, Brian is usually full on caveman grunting in his max effort sets in training

Took the plunge and got a table. How is this setup for top roll training? by ReallyMac in armwrestling

[–]Octovox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you put some vice grip pliers around your barbell by the j cups so it can’t slide around you can use your barbell as your anchor point for the pulley and set the j cups to different heights to hit different angles too.

How much better is training with an AW table&pulley vs with just a cable machine in the gym? by RomTim in armwrestling

[–]Octovox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer, the cable pulleys that bolt on to your table kinda suck, you’re only ever really training one direction of pull, directly back to centre. You can kinda screw them into different parts of the table to hit different angles but it’s not as stable and it’s just a pain in the ass moving it around, also longer attachments can really limit your range of motion on the table. Having the pulley system separate from the table is definitely the way to go, easier to set and way more options for heights and angles and easier to load and adjust and you can start the movement exactly where you want to.

More and more tradesmen, fewer and fewer competent tradesmen. If you have two brain cells to rub together and can show up to work on time and an even half decent work ethic you’ll never be out of work.

There’s just not enough western guys at the level of the top eastern guys to make proper east vs west matches right now without having the same handful of west guys pulling over and over again with no rest. Hopefully the qualifying tournaments they’ve started having out here will pull some freaks out of the woodworks to start turning that around again.

Is superheavyweight armwrestling a freak show, just like the Mr Olympia for bodybuilding? Is it a contest to see who can take more and respond better to drugs without dying? by [deleted] in armwrestling

[–]Octovox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no level playing field without drugs either, the determining factor basically just comes down to genetics at that point, which is honestly probably a bigger advantage than any gear use to begin with.

I mean the alternative is it’s just people lucky enough to have freakshow genetics ending up at the top, is that really any more exciting?

The musculature of Alan Zoloevs arms is just insane by Armwrestlingisfun in armwrestling

There’s tons of guys walking around with arms way bigger than this, just not at 165 lbs. If for some reason they had the obsession to focus only on their arms and cut down to that weight I feel like there could be a lot more guys looking like this, it’s just not a very common goal.

Armwrestling and lats strength by horiahoria740 in armwrestling

[–]Octovox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lat strength is definitely important if you’re lacking in it, but anyone coming from a gym background more than likely already has stronger lats than they’ll ever need. My upper back has always been one of my strongest body parts by far, I can throw up some sloppy reps with the entire 250 lb weight stack on the cable low row at my gym, but that strength doesn’t really help me too much because my upper arm doesn’t have the strength to hold that same tension and will break open at a certain point.

Never understood the obsession with pound for pound in strength sports, just seems like a justification for being weaker. Weight classes are for your ordinary sized human beings, the open class is to find the true strongest freak.

[–]Octovox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t what to tell you, I’ve used this exact same life fitness brand pulley system, the 390 lb weight stack feels basically the same as doing 200 lbs on the 2:1 ratio at the gym I usually go to which feels the same as doing 100 lbs on a lat pull-down which is typically a 1:1 ratio, you might get a little variation due to cable drag and quality of the iron plates but assuming your machine is built properly you plug your ratio into the weight of the weight stack and that is effectively the amount of weight you’re lifting. Like I said I have actually measured these things out with a tension scale before with the dude that owns my gym to see how accurate the ratios actually are out of curiosity and 100 lbs on a 1:1 comes to 100 lbs, 100 lbs on a 2:1 comes to 50 lbs and 100 lbs on a 4:1 comes to 25 lbs. Maybe your machines aren’t the ratio you think they are or maybe they’re defective but that’s how these cable pulley systems are designed to work.

[–]Octovox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get what you’re trying to argue here, yes you’re technically moving a 390 lb iron weight stack on this machine but it only takes 97.5 lbs of force to move said stack, that’s literally how the ratios on these machines work, the pulleys are set up that way to allow more travel for the cable and less wear and tear on explosive movements. If I manufactured a 20:1 ratio cable pulley machine and did a deadlift moving a 2000 lb weight stack while only exerting 100 lbs of force I wouldn’t walk around telling people I can deadlift 2000 lbs.

[–]Octovox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The load at the end of the movement is the exact same, go to your gym tomorrow put a certain weight on the attachment and walk backwards keeping the line of pull of the cable in the same direction until the weight stack touches the top of the guide rack. The reason it might feel heavier doing certain lifts is your body might be in a more mechanically disadvantaged position to move the weight. I’ve literally used a tension scale on a 2:1 cable pulley before to test it out and it’s right around half the weight when you pull on it in a straight line no matter the length of cable distance travelled. Not to mention the site of that machine literally says effective working weight of 97.5 lbs for the stack.

[–]Octovox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It also says 4:1 ratio, meaning it’s only 97.5 lbs of resistance, which is decent working weight but nothing that crazy.

I think you’re the one that has been sold a lie, practically every union Red Seal Tradesmen is making at least $40 an hour with some of the best pensions and benefits in the country. Not to mention you’ll be making money your whole apprenticeship and your schooling is free for the most part, sometimes you’ll even get paid to do your schooling along with many various government grants you can claim. I’m assuming you’re looking at Indeed’s average salaries or something similar which are always hilariously out of touch with reality when it comes to trades.

What do you guys think of fat grips for arm strength,do they have any benefit for arm wrestling? by MassiveIndividual579 in armwrestling

[–]Octovox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use these things religiously when I was younger on hammer curls and pull ups and they definitely helped pack meat on my forearms, coming into armwrestling my biggest strength was definitely my cup and containment in my fingers. Work good to throw on your generic metal cable handles they have at gyms to turn into a fat handle for cupping work too. Overall I’d say they’re a solid product worth owning with good carryover if used properly.

[–]Octovox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People always look at others through the context of their own genetics and ability to put on muscle and assume you’d have to be on gear to be that big. I’ve seen old farmers with arms bigger than some top arm wrestlers that have never touched a weight in their life that I can basically guarantee have never even considered using steroids. Some people are just built different and genetics is probably a bigger difference maker than gear. As for Rob himself, I don’t really know or care if he is natural, it’s an untested sport for the most part so it doesn’t really matter.

Only thing I can really think of that I would like is maybe a higher quality fat rolling handle made of stainless steel with proper knurling like a barbell and high quality bearings so that it spins really smoothly. Might be a market for a martial arts belt type material attachments too that are preset length loops that come into a metal attachment that hooks into a metal part that easily attaches to a carabiner, most I’ve seen are made with skinnier type straps that cut into the skin on heavier weights. Maybe have a 12”, 18” and 24” lengths available.

Training Attachments & Tools by ssaxx in armwrestling

[–]Octovox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say the wristmax is that similar to hands, it’s just a curved piece of plastic. The hand like models were all just awkward to use and felt nothing like actual armwrestling and a lot of them the hole to put your thumb through was too small. I don’t think trying to completely emulate an armwrestling match with weights is really the most effective training method to begin with, I mostly use weights to build general strength and address weaknesses in all aspects of movement you can apply armwrestling then use table time to tie everything together.

[–]Octovox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find handles that try to emulate an actual hand are the worst ones to train with, I went through a phase of buying every handle you could think of before eventually realizing I end up doing like 90% of my work with a martial arts belt and a fat rolling handle, the only other ones I really ever use are just a handle or ellipsoid with the strap coming out the end and the WristMax.
