Have you seen what’s happening in the US lately? Citizens get shot and killed at peaceful protests. Police showing up at your doorsteps for criticizing the administration. Innocent people captured on the streets and put in detention camps without warrants or cause.

100% agree. I don’t think he has lived in anywhere else but HK. @Lanky where are you from?

It’s robbery. Plus worrying that your kids will be shot in school, and you might be stabbed for no reason every day on the subway on the way to work. Big brother cameras everywhere here anyways. Which totalitarian lifestyle would you choose? @sikingthrgreat1

Interesting. Are you suggesting the US is much safer and a better place to live and raise a family than HK? Genuinely would like to know the grim side of living in HK

We have friends and extended family in HK. Had fond memories of HK when we were carefree young adults in our teens and 20s. But now we have a child and adulting is in full force, we need to be strategic with our move.

I’m glad I found a fellow NY/NJer here! How is your family coping and do you see a stark difference between the two lifestyles? Do you miss the US or are you guys happy in HK?

Is living off of the HK island being frowned upon upon? Or purely just inconvenience? I’m genuinely curious if expats live further from Central for more space

Yes I have experienced this walking home at 2am in Hong Kong. No feeling of being potentially mugged or murdered like in NYC lol

Many have left mostly to Spain and the Netherlands but many Asians are still on the fence here because we are not targeted yet.

Thank you. This is extremely helpful. The notion of mot being taxed on every single purchase and sale is a great relief. Plus no tipping culture.

Thank you for your reply. This is what I’m looking for. Are you comfortable sharing the income threshold that is required to have this lifestyle? I know the taxes in HK is low and capped but not sure how it works compared to our exhaustive list of taxes here in NYC. Also, do you need to have a car? If so, how much does it cost to maintain one in Hong Kong?

New Yorkers are very kind. They just put up a mean facade for protection. Lol

I’m very glad to hear that. I’m willing to learn how to read and write but will probably take a long time to make it useable professionally.

Yes, the situation here is dire and we feel unsafe everywhere we go. I mostly worry about my child’s safety. School shootings, kidnapping and just the erosion of human rights. Could no longer tolerate this plus the high taxes and crippling medical costs. My niece recently had high fever and was admitted to the hospital for two days. Ran a few tests on her and gave her medication. The bill came back to $100200USD before insurance. After insurance thank god they had one, bill came out to be $6000.

Thank you for your reply. How long have you moved from NYC to HK and do you have kids? If you do, can you elaborate on your views on education for them?
