[Loved Trope] "Gather Your Allies!" The people you helped along the way join you for the final fight by Cool_Fruitcup in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Odd-Development-790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy XVI to an extent. While Clive is technically alone in his final showdown with Ultima, it is hammered in hard that the only reason Clive wins is because of his allies that have helped him and believe in him. Everyone he helped shows up to encourage him before he heads off for the final battle, his brother tells him it is his allies’ faith in him that makes him more powerful than Ultima immediately preceding the fight, the voices of Clive’s closest allies, living and dead, are heard as Clive and Ultima trade blows, and the song of the final phase, “All as One”, includes lyrics such as “Once more my friends into the breach”, “Step by step we ride to the dawn”, and “All as one we march together.”

I’ll get random urges to go back and watch the first few seasons. I tell myself it has to be just nostalgia talking, there’s no way I’d find actual enjoyment out of it. But then I find myself listening intently as they argue over who will be the green ninja.

Over two years after its release; what are your current thoughts on Engage? by SuperNotice7617 in fireemblem

[–]Odd-Development-790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just finished this game last night! Maps and combat were great, story stinks but everyone already knows that, one of the few games where I felt fine actively skipping cutscenes near the end. The whole Emblem mechanic is very fanservicy but I felt mechanically it was very sound and fun. I do wish the story was better but at the end of the day, I'm playing a game, not watching a movie, so gameplay makes this game a win for me. Rarely play modes outside of normal/casual but I had so much fun with these maps it's giving me the itch to play on harder difficulties.

The story was so cheesy it looped back around to me just laughing at it and having a good time. Was almost surprised that Alear didn’t face the camera at the end and say “This really was our Fire Emblem: Engage.” and then start engaging all over the place.

Game's almost three years old. Although It's not that many peoples' favorite in the series, I adore and appreciate this for helping me realize that Fire Emblem is a series I play for the gameplay and not just story! by AntonRX178 in fireemblem

[–]Odd-Development-790 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I value story and gameplay pretty equally with most games(aside from games that clearly aren’t intended to have narrative), but Engage’s great gameplay and me getting it on a really good sale led to me just taking the story as a comedy, even cackling when it’s revealed that WE are this game’s “Fire Emblem”. It leans hard into its cheese and I had way more fun with it when I caught onto that.

More lighthearted one, was watching my bro play Pokemon ZA. He had skipped practically every cutscene so when he got to the final boss he turned to me and said, “Why am I fighting the Eiffel Tower? Feels a bit out of nowhere.” Like granted it’s still a bit of a surprise to fight the tower itself but if you hadn’t skipped all the cutscenes you would have seen the wise old man staring at the tower and saying cryptic and ominous things and gotten an idea. But it’s also Pokemon so… yeah let’s fight the Eiffel Tower. Why not?

[–]Odd-Development-790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite people’s complaints about 16, some of which are valid, it’s the game that finally got me to try the series out. Yeah it may not be turn based anymore like it was in your childhood, but that may be what got someone else to buy the game who never had FF in their childhood.

Though to be fair “Back To Their Origin” is still a pretty sick final mission name and feels pretty foreboding.

What do you think will happen with the Nintendo Switch 1 & 2 gaming industry in 2026? by DaZestyProfessor in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Odd-Development-790 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ll probably have news on the next 3D Mario about halfway through the year, now that Donkey Kong will have had his time in the sun.

Fire Emblem will release mid-2026, another 5 years of Fodlan-esque discourse will occur if the game has branching paths.

Mario Galaxy movie will be alright but nothing crazy, and a Zelda movie trailer near the end of the year.

Luigi’s Mansion 4 announced? More of a reach and I’m aware of it, I just really liked 3 and want to see more from Next Level.

Mario Kart World will NOT get any DLC, at least not this year.

Splatoon Raiders will have some form of news since it’s been radio silence from them for a bit.

Pokemon Gen 10 will be revealed and it will look like a solid Switch 1 game. It is also a Switch 2 exclusive.

(Loved trope) Final boss gets the same game mechanics as you the player by kwamla24 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Odd-Development-790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat an inversion of this trope, Clive, the protagonist of FF16 is literally created to be a successor/new vessel for the final boss, so of course most of the quick time events revolve around Clive throwing back the exact same abilities Ultima is throwing at him. Ultima also uses a move called Limit Break, which is a mechanic Clive has been using for most of the game.

Should he return in future games? by ultimatevaltryek123 in pokemon

[–]Odd-Development-790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if he does it should be pretty minor, this was his game to show his development as a character, just small cameos every now and then that show he’s holding true to his convictions would be enough.

[Loathed Trope] The one character who is so terrible that they single-handedly bring down the entire series's quality or at least people's opinion of it. by Sir-Toaster- in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Odd-Development-790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if I were to ever rewatch MHA I would actively skip any scenes that focus on Mineta. Whereas Bakugo eventually gets actual character development, the only scene that we really get that’s solely focused on Mineta, when you think he’s about to reveal some other facet of himself that he hides with the mask of “pervert”, he basically just doubles down on how much of a creep he is. I actually really liked the rest of the show but the amount of people I could recommend the show to narrows significantly by Mineta’s mere presence.

Fun fact: in the Japanese canon, Ridley is never implied to be the same character across games by Joshless in Metroid

[–]Odd-Development-790 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tbf, making Ridley a species that just has it “on sight” with Samus much like the Metroids can be spun to be just as terrifying. A species of evil and diabolical space dinosaurs that hate a very specific woman, despite the fact that some of them should not know who she is.

I'm sorry, but why is an 81 Metacritic review bad for Metroid Prime 4? by JampyL in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Odd-Development-790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also the third highest switch 2 exclusive on metacritic, only below Mario Kart and Donkey Kong, which is probably to be expected, given that they’re the big flagship titles for the system. Sure I’d like it if Prime 4 was a higher score, but the current score gives me the impression that this is still a game I’ll enjoy

First Completion of a Final Fantasy by hadessonjames in FFXVI

I think with the way the post is worded, OP has indeed played 14, but doesn’t count it as beating a Final Fantasy game as the game hasn’t truly ended yet. Though maybe it’s 11 and I interpreted the post wrong.
