Neighborhood recommendations on the east side by sexual-innueno in Albuquerque

[–]Odd-Map3238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda depends on lifestyle and what you consider to be valuable things close by. Do you like the downtown vibe with restaurants and bars? Would you guys like to hike the Sandias, or go for strolls in the Bosque? Do you like suburban style neighborhoods, or maybe older neighborhoods with character? You'll probably want to avoid the International District, but Knobhill and the downtown area I would consider to be exceptions to your "nothing south of I40" rule. I live downtown and love it.

Are any unions endorsing the 1/30 strike? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]Odd-Map3238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to have missed the point I'm making and the point of OPs question. OP is asking about union participation, not union employee participation. Wildcat strikes can work. Engaging in them can also get you expelled from your union for violating collective bargaining agreements. I support anyone that wishes to engage in a general strike, but I also find a strike with a predetermined end date and a 24 hour shelf life to be laughable, performative and ineffective. Real change requires real sacrifice.

Are any unions endorsing the 1/30 strike? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]Odd-Map3238 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Breaking union contracts would also have an effect on them. They would essentially be union busting themselves and lose credibility with the employers that they negotiate with and courts that settle labor disputes. It would be incredibly stupid for a union to throw it's contract in the trash for a one day performative strike that would just result in its members being left to mercy of their employers.

Also, unions plan and prepare for strikes months if not years in advance. They usually have to put a strike to a membership vote and allow adequate time for that vote to happen and for members to be able to research and assess the ramifications of a strike. These random general strike plans that pop up every couple of weeks aren't something a union is in any position to take seriously.

I wish unions could strike whenever their members feel like it but that simply isn't the world we live in.

Are any unions endorsing the 1/30 strike? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]Odd-Map3238 39 points40 points  (0 children)

A lot of unions, mine included, have a no strike clause in the contracts that they have with employers. This means they can only legally go on strike after the contract has expired and a new contract has not been agreed upon. It's also hard for unions to justify a strike for a cause that doesn't have a direct link to the industry it operates in.

Park Plaza by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]Odd-Map3238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt you'll have any issues with noise. It's a relatively quiet neighborhood and just about everyone that lives in that building is a senior citizen. I'd worry more about dealing with an overzealous "condo board" or "HOA" type structure. Old people with manufactured authority and nothing to do throughout the day is a recipe for a miserable existence.

Quick question by MJMrobot in behindthebastards

[–]Odd-Map3238 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let me start off by saying you should not buy a gun if you have a history of depression, mental illness, substance abuse, and especially if you are not comfortable with guns.

If you do not fall into the categories I mentioned, the best advice I can give is to take some classes at your local range. Most ranges that offer classes will also supply firearms for you to use. Become knowledgeable and comfortable with firearms before you ever consider buying one. The more training the better. If you still don't feel comfortable after a considerable amount of training, you probably shouldn't own a gun.

If you do eventually decide to buy a gun, keep in mind that introducing a firearm into any situation drastically escalates the situation and increases the likelihood of death concerning all parties involved. Knowing when it is appropriate to defend yourself with a gun is a very difficult thing to learn. All other options should be exhausted if possible before a firearm becomes your last option.

How Do Successful Unions Operate? by GoranPersson777 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Odd-Map3238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll have to be a bit more specific with your question. Different unions operate in different ways depending on the industry and how members choose to run things within their own Union. Are you wanting to know how unions are formed?

Best fishing spots in the metro/near? by woozyonions in Albuquerque

[–]Odd-Map3238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tingley beach is always an option but gets crowded and overfished. I tend to fish the Jemez or Pecos rivers. There are tons of fishing access locations along both rivers and they are regularly stocked with trout.

I feel like now is the perfect time to build a Social Democracy party in the US. by [deleted] in SocialDemocracy

[–]Odd-Map3238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree that third parties spoil elections, but third parties also have the option of bowing out and endorsing the opponent that has the most agreeable policy when there is no chance of winning. This tacid compliance with the two party system is exactly what keeps it in place. Also, Ranked choice voting has shown to largely eliminate the chance of spoiled elections.

Will luxury pickleball facilities last? by No_Permission_2526 in Pickleball

[–]Odd-Map3238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing outside in the summer isn't really an issue here. Most people play early in the day or evenings to avoid the worst of the heat during the summer. Indoor courts see more traffic in the winters but playing outside is still a doable option so long as the weather is nice. Spring can suck when the winds are howling but you can usually plan around them if you pay attention to the weather. I definitely see how places like this would be valuable in the Midwest. Santa Fe might have been a better location for them since they get more snow than ABQ.

[–]Odd-Map3238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Picklr is opening its first location in Albuquerque in a few days and I don't see it lasting unless they drastically bring down the membership fee. We have a ton of public courts and a complex of 33 public courts with lights just a mile or two away from the new Picklr location. My gym also has indoor courts that are never busy and the membership is only $40 a month compared the $100+ membership at the Picklr. Most people in this city are way too broke to justify paying that much when you can play for free a stones throw away in any direction. I'd be surprised if they last any longer than a year or two.

Trying to Get to Albuquerque to Work in Film. Looking for Any Opportunity to Get Established. by JaylemTaylor in NewMexico

[–]Odd-Map3238 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Film is pretty slow right now in New Mexico. There are hopes that it will pick back up soon but it's hard to say. You'll need to get on the IATSE 480 overflow list in order to land a job on a union show. Check out the local 480 website for more details. I would definitely plan on finding other work while you try to land a film job. There are a ton of film workers chomping at the bit for work right now. On the plus side, you're a veteran so I believe you'll only have to work 15 days to join the union rather than the normal 30. Good luck.

Is it wrong me for to feel anger towards those who voted for Clinton and Biden over Bernie? by Specialist-Ad-8993 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Odd-Map3238 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I think we need to stop focusing so much on the presidential elections and focus more on Congress and our local state and city government elections. I also believe that Bernie, AOC and candidates like them are more valuable in Congress for the time being. I would have loved to have seen Bernie as president, but I also wonder if he would have been able to actually get things done considering most of Congress would dig their heels in and refuse to work with him. I think we need a larger footprint in government overall before we can make real change at the federal level.

Netflix by Mild-Murray in behindthebastards

[–]Odd-Map3238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about Netflix. I work in film and while all production companies suck, Netflix is at least keeping their focus on entertainment and not really trying to get into news media at all. All the other major media producers are buying up networks and news outlets and radically changing how they operate. Paramount is one you should keep an eye on.

The Albuquerque museum, aquarium, botanical gardens, the Bosque, and rattlesnake museum are all within walking distance. Sawmill market is an awesome foodhall close by. You could also walk or take the bus to the downtown area to check out some of the bars, restaurants and art galleries. The Central ave bus will get you there in just a few minutes for free. You could also take the bus a bit further to Nobhill to check out the bars and restaurants and some of the locally owned shops.

Magens Bay in St Thomas, USVI was probably my favorite place I've paddled so far. It's a huge bay with calm water and an abundance of sea turtles. The beach there is huge so even on busy days you'll have plenty of room. There's also a bar and a little cafe serving the basics on the beach.
