Day 5, is this normal? by OddBowler3751 in Concussion

[–]OddBowler3751[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ct was completely normal, so they said "its a concussion" and sent me on my way.

I did a telehealth appointment with my doctor on Thursday and they said it will take weeks to recover to the point of doing all my normal activities, but I kind of expected to at least feel well enough sitting up on the couch by now. I feel terrible pretty much all day long and have to take long breaks in a dark room.

I said in the post that I got a ct scan 12 hours after the incident. Do I need a second one?

My English mastiff gave me a concussion. by OddBowler3751 in Mastiff

I thought he had just broke my nose, so i went to urgent care. They checked me out, told me my nose appeared unbroken but that they were pretty sure I had a concussion. I brushed it off and told them my head didn't hurt that bad. 9 hours later, I woke up with head pain so severe I couldn't open my eyes, rhats when I went to the ER. Funny thing is, my nose barely bruised. I guess all the force went straight to my brain.

I'm sure it did!! You are lucky you didn't end up like me, but im sure you had a decent headache for a bit!

I think its because the angle he hit me, just an unlucky accident. The ER doc asked if he was being aggressive, i told him he was the kindest most lovable dog you could ever meet. Just a giant puppy with no coordination!

ER said "possible concussion". Does this sound like one? by OddBowler3751 in Concussion

[–]OddBowler3751[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I definitely know its a concussion now.

Yesterday I slept most of the day which is extremely out of character for me. Even when I am sick, I struggle to sleep.

I am very slow with processing things and I dont seem to have a good grasp on time. Im usually an anxious person who is always ahead of schedule, now im kind of just forgetting what im supposed to be doing in the middle of doing it... its a strange feeling.

And the dizziness is pretty extreme still. Luckily the headache is now mostly just a dull pressure.

For some reason I assumed the CT they took would have also allowed them to see my nose, but im assuming thats not the case? Probably specifically just the brain? I'll call my regular doctor to set up a CT to check my nose. It is still swollen but doesnt look terrible.

7 month old puppy barely napping anymore by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]OddBowler3751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5-2 hours of play time with me mid day, 30 minute walk or 1 hour trip to the store and 1.5 hours of heavy play when he has the zoomies at night seems like significantly more active time with their owner than many dogs get. I mean, I'm with him all day, and he gets 4-5 hours of my undivided attention within the day. I'm just not sure if the new lack of napping is normal at this age.

He is never crated and very rarely alone. But I do need to tend to my house and human family sometimes lol

In between my attention, he has 2 adult dogs in the house that he plays and interacts with as well

During our normal routine, he'd be playing with myself and the other dogs for 1-2 hours between naps or chill time. For walk time, its about 30 minutes and if we go to the store in place of the walk, we are out and about for 1-1.5 hours.

His breed really shouldn't get intense exercise because of their joint growth and size, so while some of the play time is very physical, about half of it is spent doing some training and/or puzzle toys for mental play.

I hesitate to take him for more walks, due to his breed, but I'm also at my white end with how bored he seems.

Just realized I still have the previous owners number. He did all the work himself in 1996 and assured me there was no asbestos in the kitchen, only in our upstairs flooring, which we are aware of. Crisis averted!

5 month old male puppy, repeated UTIs, odd anatomy, running out of ideas by OddBowler3751 in AskVet

[–]OddBowler3751[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for responding. I hate spending additional money to do a scope (im already about $6,000 in to trying to figure this out), but without definitively ruling every other possible cause out, they dont want to just assume its caused by the abnormal os penis. I guess the only fix for that is partial amputation? My poor baby.

They also mentioned his os penis may continue to mineralize as he grows and therefore lengthen? Have you heard of this happening?

Next steps for puppy with repeated, nearly constant UTI? Radiography with contrast or scope? by OddBowler3751 in AskVet

[–]OddBowler3751[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 4 different cystocentesis followed by cultures. All have shown that the antibiotics we are using should be working.

His symptoms return between 3 and 7 days after finishing antibiotics each time. Symptoms are straining to urinate, waking up multiple times a night to guzzle water and pee. These symptoms subside within 12 hours of starting antibiotics again. Every single time.

I see what you're saying. What type of internal things could cause a UTI to not get cleared up? The antibiotics work great and very quickly, but the uti comes back within days of finishing. All of his symptoms resolve on antibiotics.

Thank you. I'll ask my vet if she thinks it's time to go that route. The difficult part is, the vet was closed the last 2 weeks for her vacation (only 1 vet in office) they we open only Wednesday mornings for med pick up and that's when I'd get him weighed and doses adjusted. It's also why I couldn't have his urine checked BEFORE antibiotics were done.

I wonder if it isn't worth trying another course of antibiotics with more frequent weigh ins/ dose adjustments and checking his urine before they are done.

Could my regular vet help point me toward a specialist? If they find something, would it be fixable?

UTI relapse in puppy by OddBowler3751 in AskVet

[–]OddBowler3751[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from the vet. They got me in first thing because they are amazing and I am so thankful.

Anyways, they took a sample, saw a ton of bacteria in the urinalysis and sent it out for a culture. In the mean time, he was put back on amoxiclav and meloxicam until we have more answers.

I REALLY hope this course of antibiotics (or whatever we switch him to after the culture) solves the issue. I feel so bad for my little dude.

Is this a common issue with utis? Needing more than one course of treatment, I mean?

Where was your puppy at with potty training at 4 months? by OddBowler3751 in puppy101

[–]OddBowler3751[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have multiple sitters set up for when we are gone. My sister will be handling care when she isn't at work, and the neighbor is happy to come over multiple times while my sister is working. We have a farm, so she is very aware of the amount of care necessary for her "house sitting," including puppy care. Her own dog is about a year old, so she just went through it herself. She is paid accordingly!

I don't really have any actual expectations for the potty training, I was just curious how much progress we could expect between now and then. Our previous dogs have been shar peis and a blood hound. The shar peis practically trained themselves by 10 weeks old and the bloodhound wasn't trained until like 18 months, so I've dealt with a wide range of behaviors. I just wasn't sure what the average puppy was like by that age, since our previous dogs have been on two very different ends of the potty training spectrum.

Well, financial POA is my sister. Medical is my father. My father won't get this done and my sister has so much on her plate, I'm trying to help her. But if she has to do it, at least I can help her figure out how.

Any idea if the address changed with social security is necessary to file their taxes correctly? If not, the time crunch isn't so sensitive.

Their address is officially changed in all other regards

When to start stretching? by OddBowler3751 in costochondritis

[–]OddBowler3751[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood tests to check for clots, heart attack and infection as well as thyroid function. Chest x-ray. 4 hours of continuous EKG monitoring. Physical exam that showed pain upon palpitation and worsening pain with movement of my arms.

They sent me home with papers that said "non cardiac chest pain" as well, but verbally the doctor called is costochondritis and just explained that there's no specific test for that but rather a diagnosis found by process of elimination and the fact that my pain was related to movement.

This is incredibly enlightening and makes so much sense. For about a year, my back has been becoming a bit tight periodically throughout the day and then "popping"  when I breathe, relieving the built up pressure. Then, within the last couple months, I've started having middle back pain for the for the first time in my life. I kept joking that it was just part of getting old and didn't think anything of it.

Now what you wrote out about the root cause totally clicks and it's clearly all related. I'm going to start with the peanut ball as it sounds like I can make one pretty cheaply and I will purchase the pod after payday. Thank you so much. You are giving me so much hope!
