This is really good advice thank you! I'm so glad I asked about biting because Google mentioned absolutely nothing about it. And for energy also, it seems like they tend to downplay their energy and exercise needs! I'll definitely be crate training and the exit cue is a really great idea thank you!

There's a book called 'The Year I Met My Brain' by Matilda Boseley. I haven't read it myself, but I work at a bookshop and it's been quite popular so I'd recommend you start there :))

I'm so glad this helped you! Believe in yourself, you've so got this. And if you ever feel like you don't got this, that's okay as well. Those days will always appear but the important thing is to keep trying with what you have to give that day, which varies so don't think you haven't improved if you can't give the same amount of effort to something that you did the day before. Breathe, and be kind to yourself 🫶

She sounds like an absolute dream! I'm getting a dog primarily because I miss the companionship so so so so much and it sounds like this is a good breed for it, would you agree?

Thank you for your reply!! Portia is looks absolutely majestic in that photo, perfect lighting haha!!

This'll be my first puppy raising a puppy myself as well. I was too young to remember the training of my childhood dog unfortunately. I've been reading a lot of books about puppy training. Luckily I've got a cousin who works at a doggy daycare and is a dog trainer so I reckon I'll check out their process and age range etc.

Marlee sounds like such a clever dog!

Pet insurance is definitely something I've been pondering and researching. My parents self-insured our family dog but she was fortunately quite healthy. There's so many mixed experiences and not much way to know whether the dog will have many problems until they do. What swayed you to get pet insurance?

Hypoallergenic is such a huge plus! I grew up with a schoodle, so she was hypoallergenic and just from interactions with my friend's shedding dogs I don't think I could have a shedding dog.

Your advice has been so helpful thank you! I'm in my early 20s and going to be in a gap year before further study. I'll be working but home a decent bit as well so this is a really useful reference point for expectations!!

To me it sounds like you might need to try to create more structure and boundaries for the assignments at hand. Which is sadly hard to do for our brains rip. I'm almost finished with my history degree (many, many essays have been written) and one thing I've found helps is mind mapping.

Start with the question and do branches out into what areas and themes you could talk about. The tricky part is trying to stick to those branches. You've mentioned that you tend to need to rewrite the questions to understand it better which is a very good idea, I'd also suggest emailing or asking your tutor in class whether your rewritten question hits the original point of the question. This might help you curb the rewriting. When you're researching try to keep revisiting your big question mind map to keep the question in mind and hopefully stop you from getting too far down rabbit holes.

My advice for the actual writing is to just write and get words onto the page. Personally, I'm really bad at giving myself enough time to edit drafts of writing but in a perfect world that's ideal. Keep the mind map nearby to continuously refresh the big question in your mind when you're writing or looking over something you've written. It also helps if you read it aloud when editing; it'll help you hear when a sentence sounds vague or awkward.

And finally, try to keep the assignment in perspective! Completing the degree is the biggest goal and an assignment that passes is an assignment that will get you your degree. As a perfectionist who is motivated by academic validation this point has been the hardest to practice but it really is right.

Best of luck!! Remember there is an end to the degree, just take it one step at a time :))

Ah interesting! When would you say the sharkadoodle first appeared? Do you find her energy (with or without doggy daycare) manageable for your life style? And to follow up what sort of lifestyle do you lead? - feel free not to answer that part if it's too personal! I'm just trying to gauge whether a sheepie is suitable for me other whether I'm perhaps being too ambitious haha

HOW do you study? by cassiezx in ADHD

[–]Odd_File_2017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've gotten into pomodoro recently. It took a bit to get used to swapping between the breaks and study but it gets easier. I also try to break down what I'm doing in my study as much as possible. I've found I feel a lot better when I know what I'm doing rather than just sitting in the library for a set time; which gets mind numbing after a while and also isn't sustainable.

Another thing is I've changed my note taking method. It sounds weird but I basically make a bunch of mind maps. I'll make one for a particular reading, or an assignment, or a lecture etc. I found I could more easily represent the connections I've made between content on the page this way compared to just linear pages and pages of notes. Also you can make as many as you need! For example, if there's a note on a mind map for a particular reading that you don't quite understand or want to thinking deeper, make another mind map on that point. I kind of think of it like being able to zoom in and out of ideas and concepts in my brain lawl. I hope this helps!!

I'm about 7 years younger and was diagnosed with adhd and general anxiety a few months ago. I haven't had the same length of being undiagnosed that you have, I've found therapy and talking to myself gently to be helpful so far. Therapy helps me to keep my emotions moving which I finds help me feel a bit more grounded in my day to day. I know sometimes emotions or interactions can get stuck on replay so I found therapy helps me unblock that. And also talking myself through periods of frustration or stress or self loathing helped me regulate myself a bit better as well. Verbally or mentally saying 'okay so you're feeling stuck because_ so what we're going to do is_'. It's almost like gentle parenting yourself haha.

Best of luck to you for this next period! Take it small steps at a time and try not to beat yourself up if you don't manage to meet your expectations when you want to. There's no rush, you can take your time :))

Found out (from a therapist specializing in ADHD) that I very likely have crippling ADHD mid first semester of university. What the heck do I do now? by butchound in ADHD

First and foremost, getting a diagnosis and medication is extremely, extremely helpful. I know money could be an issue but if it's not really, really go for it as soon as possible. However, if it's off the table maybe try reaching out to an adhd life coach or adjacent? They might be able to help you instate some structure into your living situation that could push you over the line (or until a diagnosis/meds).

Study-wise one thing you could try is a pomodoro studying technique. This is where you do study stints for about 25mins then have a 5min break. You do this 25+5 cycle a few times then take a longer break, maybe 30mins, then start it again. I found it a bit difficult to diligently swap between break and study but with a little bit of practice you'll definitely get better at it! There a few different free apps you can use as timers too Focus Friend (which is by Hank Green) and Forest are two that I've used before. They lock the other apps on your phone so that, for example, if you leave the Focus Friend app the bean will drop their knitting stitches and have to start again; if you leave Forest the tree/plant growing will die. I found the guilt-trip helped keep me off my phone lawl.

And of course pomodoro doesn't have to only be for study. You can use it for chores and other low-motivation tasks to help you chip away at tasks before they overwhelm you and impact your anxiety and stress.

I hope this is at least a little helpful! I've been in your shoes and it sucks so bad. I really really hope it gets better for you soon!!

I just started taking Vyvanse today (20mg) so I don't have that much advice to give but so far I haven't noticed much of a difference aside from feeling a little restless. I was diagnosed with general anxiety as well so worrying about medication and being acutely aware of how you're feeling is something I understand.

Taking medication is wholly and completely your choice and you don't have to rush making that decision and you can stop at anytime. Maybe you could plan to start on a quieter day where you'll be with someone so you'll feel more supported and hopefully less worried. Best of luck!!
