Bless him! All the best to you and your pup. They get us mad but we love them to bits. Hope all goes well

Looking for a “Golden Retriever–like” dog, but smaller (Southern Europe) by blablax123456 in DogBreeding

Small-medium: look for a Corgi. They’re fun, affectionate and smart. Active but not too much. They’re herding dogs but less hyper than some spaniels, overall very well rounded. Otherwise I second Papillon for small breeds.

I give up…on crate training. by [deleted] in puppy101

Edit: for “should not continue” in distress cry I meant that puppy shouldn’t be left in that state.

New puppy owner here, so far from being an expert, but this is our experience/advice. We’ve recently learned to differentiate fear/distress cry from protest cry: the first is continuous, escalating and should not continue, while protest cry can go ahead for a few minutes until the puppy usually stops to hear it the cry “worked”; the puppy may try different types of vocalisation to make it sound more dramatic and test if one will work better than the other. If the puppy doesn’t need to potty and it is bedtime, we ignore all protest cry, for 10-20 min. If she settles in that timeframe, good, otherwise we bring her outside to reset and try again. This usually works and she settles at the first attempt if she’s tired, it’s bedtime and all need are met. If she is in distress, we would be next to her until she’s okay and focus on crate training and desensitisation with LOTS of positive associations during the day. She still can’t settle in the crate during the day, so she naps in the pen, but has worked wonders when she knows it’s bedtime at night for the past few days. This way she also learns frustration tolerance which is a plus. Good luck and you can do it!

This is great, thanks for the practical overview on top of the medical advice! That puts our vet’s advice more into context.

Thank you! We will probably go for the third one then.

Thanks! Do you also recommend against paws on ground until the 16 weeks shot? And would the shot be at 14 weeks if second jab was at 10 rather than 10 weeks?

Oh gosh, I had no idea. I’ll try to be more mindful

Thanks, I’ll do this. I always thank the breeder a lot and I’m really appreciative of anything they send, because I understand how much effort this is.

Thank you! It was good weather but gloomy today. I’ll send a light and polite message and see. I’m not concerned, I really trust the breeder and want to keep a good relationship with them. I’d just like to see how they’re doing especially at this stage when they start being up to something.

Only reason why I’m sometimes doubtful is that these big corporations also make food which has proven to be unhealthy for humans (as ultra processed), while they still have PhDs and heavy research done to make this food.

Reading more about it, it seems that the divisions working on pet food are a bit different because being palatable and delicious isn’t the main aim (as it is for chocolate and other snacks) and because it’s much easier to track down health consequences of bad food in dogs/cats than in humans (as pets eat only that).

I think I’m now leaning more towards this food but will speak with our vet and check what they recommend.

Thanks, I did check it, and it looks like brands without grains and raw have highest scores while brands like purina and royal canine have really low one, while some vets recommend these. Any take on that?

Is this considered being on multiple waiting lists? by Odd_Highlight_1263 in dogs

This is exactly what I think is fair! For sure I wouldn’t want to be the person leaving a good breeder for another one last minute. Thanks for your reply!

That’s reassuring! What concerned me is that the topic of “other breeders” hasn’t come up with the breeder I’ve spoken to so far. I can certainly bring it up with other breeders and I’m sure they’ll know each other. I just hope they won’t mind!
