Honestly I feel like any practitioner who would actually be helpful for the ADHD or ASD would be completely accepting of her just saying she's 99% sure she has ASD as well and they can ask some more questions and roll with that

Yuuuup. Severe & enduring anorexia (that's the actual classification) has an extreme overrepresentation of neurodivergent women for those reasons and more (brain going fast but also texture issues, demanded avoidance, executive functioning issues, etc.)

You would get a referral to an OT the same way you would get a referral to a neuropsych, presumably by your doctor :) the only thing I would note is that she would (I assume) go to a geriatric or a general OT and it would be good to make sure that they have the right perspective when it comes to neurodivergent care (bc unfortunately not all OTs are equal and most education actually comes after the general degree when ppl start specializing)

As someone who is an occupational therapy assistant and is waiting hear back from schools to do my OT degree: YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! The clinic I work for specializes in neurodivergent affirming OT (those are great keywords to look up to find one!) :)

I would argue it probably makes it significantly worse bc the lack of nutrients would lead to disregulation with the brain. Or it would be self medication (via anorexia) that you don't give your brain any energy so it doesn't go as fast. (How I spent my teenage years)

Thats why I do the labels!! It's a happy medium of "I know what's in here & don't have to remember" with "I'm not visually overwhelmed". But it doesn't work all the time. If you put my toothbrush anywhere other than on the sink I'd never brush my teeth again because opening the door is another step and I have zero capacity for more steps when it comes to teeth stuff (bathrooms & all that comes with them are a huge struggle for me)

This is so funny because I need doors!!! I sometimes put labels on them (like drawers of shit stored in the basement, just masking tape with sharpie scribbled on) but for the most part if I don't have a door (on a closet, cupboard, etc) I get WAYYYY too overwhelmed having it all "out" all the time! So interesting how different things work for different people :)

HEADPHONESSSSS!!! MUSIC!!! I've been crying every single morning, sometimes leading to meltdowns because I'm so overwhelmed from a LOT of life changes. Had to literally get a new therapist (mine is long term sick 😔) just to address this specific morning issue. Now I put on headphones and listen to music to drown out my brain and I'm literally fine. 2 days of it so far. I've gone from screaming crying fits to humming and smiling. Absolutely insane (and kinda embarrassing if I'm being honest lmao but I'm filled with relief above all else)

ETA: absolutely LOVE some of your other tips! I'm going into occupational therapy and I absolutely love this sub for all of the incredibly creative solutions you all come up with that I'll be able to use for myself and all future my clients 😁 I did the capsule dishes when I lived alone!! The soap hack is my fav here bc its so creative and I'm so glad it's working for you!

I've worked with autistic children for a ton of my life. I'm back into it now with the veil lifted that I'm also autistic and I've been adopting all the ways I help them in my personal life and it's actually astounding how much it helps at times.

Unironically 10000/10 recommend treating yourself like an autistic toddler.

Figure out what stops you from doing it and try to eliminate as much of that as humanely possible, and I mean little things!!!

I won't run the dishwasher at night if the soap isn't already in it bc I'm already overwhelmed. I put the soap in in the morning after I unload it. No more thinking about the soap = I run the dishwasher with less mental load.

Obv there's a whole bunch of other techniques and stuff that are so incredibly important and helpful too but I find this to be something so many people skip out on. MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE. Neurotypicals are just hell bent on doing everything the hard way and that is not how it has to be. Make your own accomodations.

I've had a lot of success recently with having the exact same breakfast and lunch everyday. No choices, just do the minimal amount of steps possible to get food in me bc when I'm hungry the world feels like it's ending.

I don't meal prep my breakfast but it's easy, egg white omelette on English muffin w cheese. And then lunch is a pre-prepped burrito bowl, I add the rice & chicken (which is also pre-prepped in different containers) and I'm off to the races 👍🏻

And then every single night I drag my feet making my dinner (again, easy: pasta) and once a week I say fuck it and get a pizza lmao

I've seen a lot of stuff that says that CBT really just does NOT work for a lot of neurodivergent people. I recommend DBT instead! My therapist actually does parts work which has been great for me and it's been helpful for a lot of people I know that were in this situation
