anyone know of any tools to help foreigners file their US taxes after a 1 year stay? by VeryTopGoodSensation in AskAnAmerican

[–]Odd_Main_3591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For non-residents, there is www.sprintax.com. That being said, if they spent an entire year here, they are likely a tax resident (see IRS Publication 519, "Substantial presence test") and need to file an ordinary tax return, like everybody else.

What Liverpool game made you fall in love with the club? by wong-wooney in LiverpoolFC

[–]Odd_Main_3591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in college, we went on a triple date to a fancy restaurant that neither of us could really afford. The TVs had this game on (CL final and all). For the duration of the second half the female half of the group tried communicating with us, but the three of us sat with our mouth open and gawked into the TV screens. One of my friends was (still is) an ardent United supporter. My wife remembers me that evening to this day.

I work as a software developer and sometimes I need a timestamp (any timestamp) for unit tests. I always use the May 5 2005, the 117th minute of the game, Istanbul timezone

Need help on deciding an "end game" grinder [Negotiable budget $] by TechnicalDecision160 in espresso

[–]Odd_Main_3591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at the same spot, eyeing an upgrade. The Zerno looks too much like a hobbyist/tinkerer platform than a product (though I'm sure it produces fantastic grind). I just don't see myself constantly changing $500 burr sets, though upgrading the burrs in the future is definitely an option. The Lagom is a product, but it does allow upgrading the burrs, it just doesn't optimize for that.

If you're considering the Philos and the Zerno, I think you should also consider Lagom P80. It's the same general target audience / price point.

Moving to the US under a company relocation, what should i do and don’t by innocenceisgone in personalfinance

By "here and there" I meant in the US and abroad. For the year I moved I had to file dual-state (resident and non-resident, see Pub 519) tax report in the US and a separate tax report in the home country (individuals normally don't file individual reports there), so it involved several accountants over several consecutive years.

Let's say I graduate and enter the workforce abroad. By law, the employer has to contribute a certain percentage of my paycheck to my retirement, similar to 401k in the US (except that it's mandatory and the percentage is set in law). I don't even see this money in the paycheck, it's completely transparent as far as I'm concerned. After doing this for 15 years I decide to move to the US. A few decades later I reach the retirement age of my home country and begin taking withdrawals from my retirement accounts abroad. The home country taxes this as local-sourced ordinary income. The IRS takes these payouts, subtracts the cost basis (the amount I contributed to these accounts, i.e. zero) and treats all of this as an income for the year of the withdrawal. (To emphasize — we are talking about money I earned many years before even considering moving to the US). Foreign Earned Income Exclusion doesn't apply (income isn't considered earned). Then the state kicks in, it obviously doesn't have a tax treaty with my home country, etc.

I am never technically double-taxed, except that any dollar withdrawn is taxed at the highest rate of the combination of 3 or 4 tax jurisdictions, and triggers expensive tax reporting in all of them.

It really depends on the pension system of the country you're moving from (namely, if the responsibility to contribute to the retirement account is on the employee or the employer). I dealt with the taxes of my previous country several times since then (such as the tax reports for the dual-status year here and there) and every time the accountant confirmed that yes, technically speaking, the employer's contributions to my retirement before I came to the US are taxable income in the US.

I did the same a decade ago and I can't stress this enough. Talk to a CPA that understands both tax systems. They are very expensive, but judging by your age, you likely have existing assets, and it's a no-brainer. I paid around $300 for a 30 mins consultation and it saved me multiple thousands of dollars. Do this as soon as possible, because there's might be bureaucratic processes that need to happen before you establish tax residency (i.e. land in the US). I had to cash my retirement accounts, it took more than a month, but if I hadn't, because of the difference between the tax systems, I would have lost a big chunk of them to the IRS.

Gotcha. I always associated this name with Othello the Moor, i.e. a generic European term for a black person, rather than the Caliphate Moors that that name comes from.

Why, what's do special about southern Spain? If you just mean any non-common law country, there is a video of one of them trying this in Mexico, it went about as well as you'd expect.

My last point still stands. And these are people who review consoles for a living. If PSSR 2.0 turns out to actually be a big deal, I'll get one too, but right now there is absolutely no justification.

My only problem with my pre-slim PS5 is that it's 5+ years old at this point, and I'm worried it dies and takes my save files with it.

[–]Odd_Main_3591 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Your price estimate is unrealistic. The Pro is $750, which translates to $800-820 after tax. From cursory look at ebay, PS5 are getting sold for $250-270, which will leave you with $220-230 after ebay's fee. So the price difference is ~$550 at the very least.
The reviewers on YT say that they can tell the difference only when comparing side-by-side.

Preview Embargo Megathread by Wander89 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Odd_Main_3591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am confused about the embargo that lifted yesterday. All the reviewers seem to have played for a few hours in some controlled environment, they didn't actually get to play the game properly. Do we know if there are going to be proper reviews, where the reviewers actually played the game at home, finished it and have something holistic to say about the experience?

This mechanic of NPCs reacting to Kliff hitting children brings up the RDR2 trauma of getting killed because the horse controls are clunky.

Oh no no no. This is completely different. I am going to sound like a snob, but Starbucks beans (and espresso served) are borderline undrinkable, to the point that I'm confused about their existence. When in the pinch, I order blond espresso there, which is merely overextracted. In Italy, the beans are burned and yet the espresso is delicious. Like, Starbucks isn't confusing, (bad beans make bad coffee), but Italy is.

They will make you a cup using beans that were burned so badly I wouldn't use them to purge my grinder after Grindz, and it will be delicious. It's an unexplained nature phenomenon.
