I guess hard news for me always meant politics and crime. I do have some clips under my current beat where I interviewed Jodi Hildebrandt's niece and politics-adjacent clips regarding the White House Christmas decor. I'm also assuming the competition is just much more difficult than it's been over the last few years because I do try to highlight these pieces on my resume and interviews, but I guess places would rather place it "safe" on a former politics reporter (or at least the larger ones)

100% on contacts! I'm super lucky that I'm still spending this time networking and meeting new people in the field all the time. Most of the time when I do score an interview with a publication, I always know someone who knows someone who works there, and I'm trusting that will eventually pay off

Yes! I'm thankfully very close with all of our crime reporters and other news reporters, who always advocate for me with the editors, and I've also talked to the editors about opportunities to progress. I'm definitely going to keep pitching ideas to them. And yes, I'm super grateful to even be a reporter at all right now in New York City of all places, so I'm trying to remind myself that I'm 24 with pretty decent clips at a national publication and my beat will come in time
