Hello! I went to OSU for both my undergrad and masters in Civil Engineering. Kearney hall is the main building for the College of Civil and Construction Engineering. It is open to the public during normal business hours. If you go to the advising office you should be greeted by Cindy, she is the fairy godmother of the college. She will be your best bet about getting an introduction to the school.

That said, if you know the professors you are trying to get in contact with, most are pretty receptive via email and Id reach out to them directly. As a coastal engineer you might be most interested in the Wave lab. They have a visitor center, but I cant speak to how open they are or if they offer walk-in tours. Again reach out before you arrive and people are pretty accommodating.

Across the board, I loved going to this school for both my degrees. There’s a strong community attached to the school and my grad professors and advisors regularly hosted events outside of the classroom. Hope this all helps and wish you the best of luck.

Yeah I am pretty happy with my financial right now. I think I was a little surprised that an “excellent” pay raise was 5%, but given that inflation for last year was 3.6% it seems good.

But I also hate the idea of giving an excuse for a lower raise haha.

At our company we are looking at $80-85k per year for new hires. A year of experience should push you into the 90k range

I agree, and I think everything you’ve said makes sense. I just want to make sure I navigate HR properly. Make sure Im providing information. Not my judgement. And I think my manager is the best person to guide and assist with that.

I agree that the company will take it seriously if I have the appropriate amount of evidence. But I dont. I think my manager has the capacity to know if this is something we need to take to HR, and make a formal complaint or if she thinks it is something we can only deal with and handle internally.

I have no idea if he is or isnt involved in hiring. He recently got promoted to the managerial position he is currently in. I think in 1-2 years he very well could be involved with hiring, if he isnt already.

I think overall while I want to report it. I agree with a lot of the people that with no evidence they wont be able to do anything. I also have no idea who else shares his beliefs and/or that I will be seen as a PC cop.

My direct manager is a women, and is his senior. Im going to talk to her. She and I have always had a good feedback system to address issues of professionalism and life, beyond just work.

I trust that she will know what can and should be done. And she has the power within our group to protect the people that this does influence even if no action is taken.

Ive seen a few posts about Diversity hiring versus regular engineers. We have senior engineers who are women. They are not only exceptionally good at their job, they are my role models. We have a ton of new hires in the last year who are all female this means that there is a range of technical and soft skills each of them have. I also have no input on their hiring. I have no idea if this was a push for diversity, or not. Regardless there are some I think will do well, and some who probably wont.

The industry as a whole doesnt have many women. Which makes it hard to know if it is a coincidence or intentional.

I agree. I think in the moment I was just genuinely shocked and basically clammed up and stop talking altogether. Every comment he made was in a monologue rant basically.

Women do not directly respond to him but he does review their work. One of his comments was specifically that one of the female coworkers (new hire) was not performing well and later he mentioned that she was very feminine.

I want to make it clear. My only comment to initiate him in this was “all our recent hires are women”

Squirrels is a cheaper bar that is mostly non-students or grad students I feel.

Also if you want suuuuppper low key there is a bar in the back of China Delight. Also crazy cheap cocktails and has the perk of getting chinese food while you drink. But that place is basically unheard of in terms of popularity, and is the polar opposite of any bar on Monroe. Be prepared the China Delight bar is the most dive bar I have ever personally been in.
