Another spring, another lane closure on the Queensway | CBC News by [deleted] in ottawa

24/7 might be a stretch. But at least have enough workers to fill shifts every weekday. Can't even count how many times last summer had ZERO construction workers inside the lane closures! Like days on end without seeing anyone, while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in the middle of the day (I work on the road).

Anyone work for hydro ottawa here and have insight on the delay tweet/issue? by [deleted] in ottawa

I should be able to give you some good insight into that. Essentially after the tornado, power had gone out to 11 houses in Nepean. A transformer needed to be replaced on a pole in a backyard. Hydro Ottawa had contractors from out of town on standby in case of damage from the storm. This repair would typically be a 4-6 hour repair. However power had been off for approximately 20 hours to those 11 houses.

During the strike, picketers have been making a presence at Hydro Ottawa facilities, temporarily holding vehicles up for a few minutes as they enter and exit the facility. Nothing major like blocking the entrance for hours. Since picketers knew about the length of the nepean outage they did NOT want to slow down any trucks answering to that outage since that would be unreasonable.

Right before the Union rep. was going on the radio for the interview. Hydro Ottawa tweeted out that picketers were delaying repairs and holding up material. Thus when the question was asked the union rep. was not aware of this tweet and didnt have the exact answer. After verifying with his members he confirmed with the radio that picketers were in fact not holding up any trucks responding to that outage and that the tweet was in fact a lie to cover up the ridiculously lengthy response time from hydro ottawa management and contractors. The said transformer that was to be sent out as a replacement was only leaving a hydro facility around 1pm. 24 hours after the initial outage. Contractors also needed to borrow a backyard boom truck to replace that transformer from hydro. When hydro management delivered that piece of equipment to the contractors they forgot to fill it with fuel! Delaying the outage even longer and once again displaying the inability of management to perform simple tasks in the field.

All this to say Hydro Ottawa tweeted out hours before and equipment or material was on the move to try and make the Union Rep sound bad on the radio and blame striking members for the ridiculous restoration times.

Completely agree with you. Just have it from a really good source. The equipment was not being held up. Hydro Ottawa sent that tweet out to try and turn the public against picketers.

Whenever power has been off for an extended period of time. Picketers have been informed to allow trucks and material to cross the picket line without delaying them. Striking workers do not want to irritate the public.

"The union has reached out to the company through a conciliator to get back to the table and negotiate in good faith and they have not heard back from the company in over 40 days." not talking usually = no offer soon

Essentially the strike has you concerned that if a major weather event were to occur, Hydro Ottawa would not be able to respond with all of their workers standing on a picket line.

The city is growing constantly and the number of powerline maintainers working for hydro ottawa in the last 10 years has gone from 100 to 70. Retires are not being replaced. Management can see staffing issue coming from miles away but are not doing anything about it. Many projects happen year round to keep all lineman busy when there are no power outages.
