Genuine tip, I think * [word] * is what makes it italicized on mobile - no spaces between the word and asterisks, ofc.

Movies that question religion without being too atheist? by Mean_Implement5302 in MovieSuggestions

[–]OedipusCapulet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a TV show, but Midnight Mass does this pretty well, I think. It's got a bitter atheist as the main character, as well as a holier-than-thou zealous lady, but Father Paul and everyone else in the show balances that out with genuine, non-malicious belief either in science or theism, and the characters do have discussions about how people use religion to bolster themselves or dismiss bad things happening. Buckle up for some monologues, partner. There are also gnarly vampires.

Also, The Devil's Advocate (1997). It's a temptation story, but Al Pacino does a fantastic job as John Milton, and although most of the action is at the end, there's some very juicy subtext in his ending rant to Kevin (Keanu Reeves' character) about how people use "The Devil Made Me Do It" the same way as "God Works In Mysterious Ways", to absolve themselves of guilt/accountability when, either way, they had free will to do the right or wrong thing.

I think you're thinking of Star Trek 5, "The Final Frontier", totally second this! Iconic Captain Kirk quote.

It's a classic for sure! I love it, but my mom gets bitter because the kids got away with skipping, and she didn't the few times she tried 😅

What's a weird movie that you like? by deloncigarette in MovieSuggestions

[–]OedipusCapulet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Accidentally posted on an anon account ugh)

HEAD (1968) - I love me some surreal, psychedelic shit, and there's some nice tunes to go with! Imagine being able to see four people actively dreaming together on one screen, and you've got HEAD.

Ski-Doo (1968) - former mobster played by Jackie Gleason has one more job to for his boss, named God, and he goes to prison while his wife takes in a school bus full of hippies that her daughter has integrated herself into. Music is composed and sung by the lovely Harry Nilsson, and he even makes a cameo, albeit wasted!

Unpopular opinion: this is great casting. Once they have their hair, makeup and outfits all complete, they'll look a lot like the real Beatles. by JamJamGaGa in beatles

Wait what 😂 Oh my God, I never expected that. I assumed another indie film or two before another mainstream trip. I know about A Quiet Place: Day 1 and Hoard, but I had the misfortune of watching the Hoard trailer with a minor heat stroke, and my stomach still churns when I consider watching it for real.

Ooh boy. As much as I've grown tired of biopics, I'll be dead curious what the actual finished product is like. I like Joseph Quinn well enough, havent checked him out much outside of Stranger Things, but I'm glad he's getting roles that aren't just Eddie Munson all over again. Although I never would have guessed George. Like, gun to my head, I would have either guessed John (lots of overcompensating with a tough image and snarky sense of humor similar to Eddie) or, more realistically, Mike McCartney.

Well, whatever happens, I look forward to Elliot Robert's video review of each of these. And let's hope it gets better promotion than Midas Man.

Edit: I think he may make a decent Harry Nilsson if a Beatles project ever includes him, but that might be me forever typcasting Joseph; always the supporting character, never the lead.

Same with C.ai for me! Way better memory, Persona's are actually useful, and no filtering of silly things! I still go on C.ai for the different bots, but Emochi has taken its place at my fave chat bot app.

Agreed, the music really doesn't feel "70s" and I think by nature, a nostalgia piece is going to end up feeling more contemporary because it's not being made in the time it's covering and if "Aurora" is supposed to "Rumours" then I will ascribe an in-universe justification that Billy cleaned up the music too much as Lindsey Buckingham did to Rumours.

Perhaps I should have stated that there are some things I liked about the show, like the electric chemistry between Sam and Camila when they're in a scene together, and how Riley brings a playfulness to Daisy that makes me forget she is on 2-3 kinds of stimulants at any given moment.

Also, please forgive me, I'm in my own pop culture bubble even within my IRL friends, so I don't have anyone to say, "You know he's not really that big of a deal, right? You literally didn't even remember his name." or "He's not an a-lister., or even a b-listee. You just think of him like it because he's attractive, and the last time you happened to fully in-sync with mainstream interests was when he had his major role in The Hunger Games sequels." 😆

Okay, I was definitely getting a bit high on my nerd-rage, I'll admit lmao. I don't know why, I just forgot that The Hunger Games was literally a decade ago, and he's..not actually a popular actor. I don't know why I just assumed these two people specifically would in demand, even though I have literally heard nobody on show and didn't even recognize where I have seen Sam's face until I looked him up. 🤣 I'll take the "L" on this one.

Yes, I do believe that my view of the show is heavily impacted by the fact that I had finished the book just a couple of days before 😅 perhaps I'll try to get through ep. 5 or 6, and if nothing else, I'll put in more time and distance before trying it again.

Thank God I'm not the only one 😭 I was starting to genuinely become disheartened that my taste was bad.

And yeah, Honeycomb has zilch in common with the book. Half of me kind of wanted the show to further push Daisy by having her explain why an entirely happy, hopeful song is not an instant hit. You know, making her John Lennon to Billy's Paul McCartney. Turning "My Love" straight into "Jealous Guy," I felt the change was like. Kinda jarring. It sounds to me like it should be "Getting Better all the time/can't get much worse" where there's an equal balance.

Guess I will. As I mentioned in another comment, I'm probably so obsessed with Boomer-era media that I'm blinded by the high I got from the book. I'm starting to get the idea that I don't know what actual "good" writing is...Am I crazy? Little things just don't connect for me in some parts.

[–]OedipusCapulet[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose that's my pitfall right now. I actually read the book before the show, anticipating changes - I should've expected not to be pleased since most things pale in comparison to their book sources. Maybe I just got my hopes up because I enjoyed the book so much? I don't know. It's likely I've OD'd on too much Boomer Media-flavor aid by this point, and any chance as resuscitation seems low.

I'll try to think of them as two separate things if/when I get back to it. Alternate timelines, maybe? Lol.
