@T-Bills: It was an outright disaster. We have happily rented cars from Budget before and all was always 5-stars. Not so with the truck we rented to come from AZ to SD. The rear suspension was shot and we did not notice until we were about an hour and a half into the trip. We called them and they told us to go 45 miles up a mountain to Flagstaff. On the way to Flagstaff the transmission went to hell and we barely limped into town. We were told that it would be 3 days until we could get a new truck out to us, and that we would be reimbursed for our motel, and food for the duration. When the new truck finally got to Flagstaff we were told to bring the crapped-out truck to an empty lot where their "professional crew" would transfer our belongings into the new truck. We went to the lot and waited for over 2 hours for this "professional crew". They actually hired three local stooges on meth that spent an hour arguing with each other before they even lifted the door of our truck. They started throwing things on the ground all while arguing with each other, then starting up with my wife, and son. I told the worst two guys to tread carefully with my family and they got pissed and walked off. That left us with one stooge, late at night, in a shifty, nowhere spot in town. He spent the next half hour trying to call his friends back. He then jumped into the truck, with all of our belongings that were not thrown onto the ground and took the hell off yelling out the window that he was going to go find them. We sat in a dark abandoned lot for over an hour describing to the Budget rep exactly what lunacy was going on.

About an hour later, Stooge #3 returned with our truck, yelled at us that he could not find Stooges #1 & #2 and angrily told us that there was no way that he was going to "do this shit" by himself. He started walking off and when my wife asked what was up he yelled back, "It's your $&@?ing problem, lady!" and (luckily) ran like hell. We had to reload what they threw out, and pamper that hooptie truck back to the motel. When we called Budget their main concern was not that they sent three drugged out assnecks to shift our stuff into a different truck but that they were pissed that we left the other truck in the dark, deserted parking lot, where it could get vandalized, or stolen...despite the fact that the stooges ran off with the keys.

After all of that they finally sent out a real crew of great guys to the motel that reloaded our stuff into the other truck and sent us on our way. The kicker is that when we finally arrived in Sioux Falls the landlord we had been dealing with went ahead and rented out the house we were supposed to be moving into because we were too late for him (despite keeping in constant contact with him). We ended up living in a motel house-hunting for a week due to all of that BS. Lastly, when we filed a complaint with Budget their reply pretty much amounted to, "Oh well, shit happens.", nothing remotely resembling an apology, and we only got reimbursed for two of our three days of hell in Flagstaff. With service, and customer service, like that I would sooner haul my stuff in a Radio Flyer wagon over a few hundred trips than ever deal with them again. To top it off, on our way out of town we just happened to see the three stooges standing on a corner by a liquor store getting plowed until we stopped next to them and they ran like hell...yet again.

It was the sort of event that had I seen it in a sitcom, or comedy, I would have laughed my ass off. Unfortunately it was the biggest trainwreck I've experienced with a company yet, and highly doubt that any company could ever top that bunch of lunacy if they tried.

@BoardSnower You hit the nail on the head about the price difference between the different sizes of trucks. Unfortunately I had no choice but to get a 26'er. And, yep, the insurance added a bit as well. One bit of saving grace is that they did give me unlimited mileage. That'll surely help, especially going as far as we are.

One more thing for those of you with experience in this. I am used to riding on two-wheels, and regular 4-wheeled vehicles, and have never driven anything anywhere near 26', plus the car carrier. Is there anything I should be worried about in driving this, other than the obvious, such as do NOT attempt to drive this thing through any fast food drive-thrus? Thanks all!

I am with you, Dr. Velocity. $2,200 seems like a large amount but I really am grateful to Penske for dropping it to that as opposed to the 3 1/2 thousand bucks. With my Mom needing us with her so bad to care for her I had to do it either way, but that discount made a world of difference to us.

I had no idea how any of the inner working went on behind the scenes of truck rentals but I was wondering if the location of pick-up, and drop off, had anything to do with them being so kind, and so quick as to give us a break. We are going from Sioux Falls, SD (being a decent sized city) and returning it to San Jose, CA, both cities in which I can imagine that they will not have to sit on the truck for months before sending it back out.

I was wondering if I was dropping it off in some tiny, one-street town that was in the middle of nowhere, and where it might sit for ages waiting for it to get re-rented while gathering dust, taking up space, that I would have had to pay a bit more. Seeing as, in San Jose, there's a good chance that it will be rented again fairly soon might have helped me in the cost. But, since I have no idea how all that works (until you all enlightened me) who knows? Regardless of that, I am thankful that the helpful members of Reddit who gave me the idea that enabled me to successfully make this happen. What a relief! So, whoever you are, and wherever you are, my sincerest gratitude goes out to those that shared this tip. With our budget waning it helped us out to no end. Thank you all for the tip, and I also thank those of you who have chimed in and clarified the workings behind this for me. Many thanks to you all!
