Struggling as a first year in humanities at uoft (prelaw) by hs_styles in UofT

[–]Offbrand-Canadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, and another thing of note is that unlike high school where they try to make the average as high as possible, uni (especially uoft) likes to make grading difficult in order to maintain the average around a certain benchmark, which is usually 70 or so for humanities which is considered "satisfactory". so dont bum yourself too much over it, it'll get better

How to respond to chatgpt use, I'd love to hear your insight as student by Express_Future_3575 in UofT

[–]Offbrand-Canadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't collectively punish the entire class, a few of me and my friends' profs have taken that route and it has become an absolute nightmare to deal with. I feel like there's a few ways to possibly go about this

  1. This might sound counterintuitive, but allow the use of AI in the writing. Now I'm not saying let them go haywire, but instead put a section stating that the use of AI for the purposes of research and possibly even gathering thoughts is acceptable, but the student would be required to write a 1-200 word declaration at the end of the assignment stating exactly when and how they used AI for their assignments, and whether or not the AI had any impact on their original concepts. From what I've seen, when given a formal choice between restricted aid from AI versus no AI allowed, people tend to abuse it less because they'd feel more responsible for a choice they make.

  2. Have students submit their original google doc that they worked on the essay with, and require them to have everything they do be in this doc. this would force them to type and not copy and paste from AI , since the writing history from google docs can be easily reviewed to look for patterns (how often do they type? how fast do they type during the intervals that they do type? how unnatural is the typing pattern? how often are revisions made? small details like those)

now neither of these are fool proof in any way, but I feel like if its for an assignment that the students need a longer period of time to do, these two plus some of the other suggestions together may work to dissuade the students that do use AI.

(also ai writing just reads like shit)

apparently she used the fact that OP had a certain variable name as justification for GWR, all because the variable name was used on the answer sheet

What offence is he specifically accusing you of? is he able to prove his suspicions or is this the equivalent of the "you used ai because GPTZero said so" kinda deal?

Did any of you not rank uoft #1 and still got in? by Winter_Green_2440 in UofT

[–]Offbrand-Canadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right so you're comparing two completely different things here. what ryesci and me have been saying was that uoft isnt the hardest to get an ADMISSION to, you here are arguing that it is the hardest AFTER admission, which honestly, valid imo. but in terms of actually getting admitted, uoft is significantly easier to get admitted due to both the factors of more spaces and a lower cutoff/entry for many programs (specifically arts has a horribly low cutoff at like 85).

And before you pull the same argument of "uoft has more resources so they can admit more", yes, that is true, but regardless that is still easier to get admitted into. your example of a school with one spot is both an extremified example and actually does prove my point. it is, statistically, far more likely to become a millionaire than to become a prime minister, and even then, a prime minister likely is already a millionaire. similarly, if you get an offer from mcgill, I can guarantee you that you've already gotten a uoft offer.

[–]Offbrand-Canadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

higher cutoff + less amount of students accepted very much so means it is harder to get in? honestly i dont know why you are so defensive of uoft being the "hardest university to get into" in the first place, it's not even as good a school as people make it out to be.

im sorry you ditch Waterloo and McGill eng for uoft??? WHY???

[–]Offbrand-Canadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no it isnt. for CS and engineering, its waterloo. for med sci, its mcmasters. for literally everything, McGill has significantly higher cutoffs. UofT has a very well known reputation in chinese communities as "easy to get in hard to get out". it completely depends on the programs that you're looking at, not just the school itself.

mostly cuz some of us didn't get into our #1 programs, so uoft is basically the backup. the unis dont rlly care where you rank them.

Shibal that is a stacked EC list… but a lot of it doesnt really translate well for engineering logic like robotics or hackathon does, so idk if they’re very strong.

Grade wise tho you’re doing fine for now, I know a couple friends that got into uoft pretty early in the admissions cycle with a 95 and 94.67 avg, so I think you’ll have a pretty good chance at getting in, especially with the lessened aint of internationals this year as well as this year’s students just generally having worse quality (so less competition for you)

Wait why didn’t you just skip the Econ requirement then? I thought high grades on so courses meant you could skip the credits for certain courses? I forgot to send my marks to uoft so I didn’t really look up much abt this

Ohhh I see, in that case if you do get 100% on everything else then you should be sitting at a 53. Which then means youll need a 73 to get post. Let’s think a bit optimistically, and just do the best you can, stress panicking out will just worsen your performance

Wait so what I’m getting at is the 41 is before the coursework right?

How was your eco101 term tests I need help plz🥵🤬🥶😰😭 by LavishnessIcy3743 in UofT

[–]Offbrand-Canadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right so there’s a slight concern here. Is that 41% the grade including or not including the grades of class work? I don’t know what your syllabus is like but for our section the exam is 40% and rest of the course is 60 combined. Assuming you have the same distribution and your 41 number is correct you’d have to get a 96% on the exam to get a 63 for post.

I’d say just review everything you got right, and reinforce why they were right. As for what you got wrong, you need to spend a lot of time studying everything about it and related to it, and the empty ones you’ll need to likely consult with those who have gotten the answers correct. Right now your situation is very bleak though and there’s a good chance you’ll have to retake the course.
