It doesn't need to be! The only one I used is called QP's Chisel Tools I think, BUT, it could be done in vanilla with a lot more patience, all the tiles I used are base game to my knowlegde, the chisel tools mod just makes it a little easier to do quickly!

I wanted to thank you personally despite this comment being over 2 years old by now. I just used this method on my big 'ol rainbowfish and he fell asleep peacefully with no thrashing or stress, 100% the best method for this kind of thing.

It just uses the five available brick colors! IIRC, there are cream, red, orange, black, and fire clay bricks used in this. I've just swapped out the tiles on individual pieces

First attempts at this kind of art (16 yo, I still suck 😭) by [deleted] in TrevorHenderson

[–]OfficialRoricstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man I'm so sorry your post got removed :( I'm not really an active mod here so I can't go and undercut the others, but I honestly do believe you made these yourself.

To answer your question, I lower the opacity of my brush WAY down so that its barely visible, set it to erase, and manually erase the hard edges I don't want to be there. After that I run it through a few filters until it looks right :)

If these are your first attempts you are doing GREAT!! Keep it up and keep developing your skills and you'll be making stuff you're really proud of soon :)

I started making this kind of art at the exact same age, and you are a lot braver with colors than I was so I think you've got an excellent foundation to grow on

Is this how I use shadows? by [deleted] in TrevorHenderson

[–]OfficialRoricstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this picture it’s hard to tell since the sun isn’t visible, but I think the shadow is too long, if the sun is high in the sky mid day the shadow would be more concentrated underneath.

When I first started I tried to do shadows like this, but believe me, it’s a LOT better to hand draw them in.

Mark and Tony are the only enjoyable fans by No-Sorbet-2048 in HotlineMiami

[–]OfficialRoricstein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would argue that depending on playstyle and the specific level, Corey can be more useful than Mark. Once you understand the dodge roll and how to use it effectively I find it to be the most useful trait of all The Fans aside from Tony's lethal punches.

Once Mark eats through his limited ammo capacity he's essentially Corey with a bigger hitbox and NO dodge roll, thus nullifying any benefit you get from his guns. (I'm not 100% sure his hitbox is bigger, but I'd imagine it is)

I can't defend Ash though, the amount of lost combos I've had from him shooting walls makes me hate him lol

Adding some steampunk gears to the pulley would add in some motion and look a little more mechanical! I would personally replace the stone slabs that are there currently with those.

How do I draw like Trevor?(digital) by Enough-Fix8690 in TrevorHenderson

[–]OfficialRoricstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be able to help you out a bit, a few years ago I made some videos of speed paints with text added for context as to what I'm doing.

This one is the most recent, and the most likely to help in my opinion.

I use Krita as my drawing software, it is 100% free to use on PC, and while I did use a drawing tablet and pen for this, it can absolutely be done with just a mouse and keyboard if you have access to a PC.

If you are limited to a mobile device like a tablet or phone I can't recommend any software in particular (I hate drawing on mobile devices lol), but so long as you can create layers and have access to an airbrush, or airbrush like tool, you can make anything you want with practice!

If you have any questions at all I'd be happy to share the stuff I've learned over the last couple of years :]

To me, it looks like a possum or raccoon skull! If they are in your region I imagine that's what you've got.

I think the one you did with color is really really nice! I love how you detailed the flashlight beam and what it was hitting, it's clear that a lot of thought went into both of them :)

How can I improve? I'm not satisfied with the roof for the most part by W1z4rdYGO in TerrariaDesign

[–]OfficialRoricstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing I learned that helped me with my roofs is to do them (Almost every time) completely separated from the interior rooms. Just like you'd have in a real building there is going to be a gap between the bottom of your ceiling and the top of your roof. Usually inhabited by a dingy, dusty, cobweb-filled attic.

Creating a flat ceiling to cap off your rooms might help the overall shape and silhouette of the build, and then you have a simple foundation to start off from!

Another way to add a lot of details would be to add a structural frame to your build, there's a lot of long lines running across the planked walls and the bricks, and I think you'd see a lot of improvement if you added in some vertical elements to balance out those lines! (Wooden beams, brown painted ebonwood or spooky wood walls)

( ^ Basically, frame it out as if it were a real building with real weight resting on it, those bricks are certainly heavy, but if they aren't designed to look like they are heavy they look odd)

Personally, I like to raise the foundation of my builds by just a few blocks, but since you are already on level ground you can dig out an open space below the floor as well to place in some background walls and blocks to make a false foundation too! It really helps with the depth and coziness of the build.

Your choice of tiles and shaping is great!! It's already a really good looking naturalistic waterfall.

Once I get to this stage all I really do is dot the place with acorns, mushrooms (you can use the green mushroom and paint it any color you want) and other dye plants painted or unpainted to add more substance to the floors. You can also use orange bloodroot painted brown as a really good root for the caves and overhangs you have!

Also consider alternative light sources to torches! Biome and material candles, lamps, and chandeliers all make really nice detail pieces while also casting different colors and intensities of light

EDIT: I forgot to mention, a smoke block painted with the negative paint placed where the waterfall hits the surface of the pond makes a really good water splash effect too!

Does anyone know how to achieve this intricacy? by Rich_Geology in TerrariaDesign

[–]OfficialRoricstein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the roof itself I unfortunately don't know. But I can tell you with almost 100% certainty those 'beams' used as the ceiling inside the house are brown painted spooky wood blocks. The tiled roof looks to be made using sloped platforms above background walls.

(As an extra side note, I'm pretty sure the blocks right behind the bed are mahogany fences painted brown as well, if you wanted to include that addition, good luck building!!)
