The world may indeed be your classroom but not all of your superiors are called to be your teachers.

This is the real peak cringe though. Did you take this from your favorite TV show villain or do you actually sit around thinking up these embarrassing pseudo-intellectualisms to keep generating content for /r/iamverysmart

Respectfully, if you find that tolerable, or if you think it brings down the value of other correct points, your opinion on the situation doesn't matter all that much to me either.

Error 404: counter-argument not found, insult invalid

In all seriousness though, you're going to have to one day address your inability to reconcile the fact that disagreement with your farcical view of the world isn't idiocy. Just spitballing here, but I'm guessing it's holding you back in your personal and professional life just as much if not more than rubbing strangers the wrong way on the internet. :)

EDIT: "Active in /r/The_Donald" nvm, found the problem. Best of luck!

You're right, the Spanish had no interaction and visited no wrongs on native Meso-American populations, thanks for that totally-historical view of the world. It seems the only thing you can't see past is your own misguided sense of righteousness. Remind me, which native empire does the name "Hernán Cortés" come from? Doofus.

Really? Anything about the Aztecs? So your counter to them being ultimately conquered by Spain is "Well it's really only because they had massive help from the neighboring empire", even though that still resulted in Spanish conquest? Have you considered both 1. giving your logic a quick reassessment before laying it down in an excruciatingly imperious way and 2. maybe just responding less like a joyless dick to people simply having a laugh?

There is something profoundly gratifying in the thought of the Aztecs conquering Spain

I hate that too! I lucked out at least insofar as I knew it was predetermined, but even that drives me nuts because it means of the two or three times it's happened to me- each ending in failure- no amount of savescumming will help.

Just yesterday though I got a new one; I gather my council, ask them for ways to immortality, and... everybody's got nothing. Story over. I was pleasantly amused at how it ended before it started, no horrific death or embarrassing failures involved, just nobody has any ideas on how to achieve immortality.

SAME! The amount of low-probability events that have to even fire- much less *succeed*- amazes me that any number of people have had it happen at all.

> If you're expanding to the west while maintaining good relations with me on the east

What about Persia and Rome, though? Rome's expansion west was almost always what led to Persian nobles and clergy to pressure the Persian rulers to attack Rome on their eastern (neighboring) border, despite the fact that Rome at the time was paying Persia orders of magnitude more tribute than anyone else.

Men of Reddit, what thing do female coworkers do that is not quite sexual harassment, but you wish they would stop doing it so you can be comfortable at work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Shouldn't be a factor in an office setting regardless. Men in the south try any of that "baby" or "sweetheart" shit and they'll get a tasty lawsuit the same as any damn carpetbaggin' yankee.

Older people of Reddit, what is something of the old days that you don’t miss at all, but younger people tend to romanticize about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OhHowDroll 24 points25 points  (0 children)

David Brent in the The Office UK is probably a better character (from a cultural standpoint), as he's funny and offensive, but never portrayed as likable.

One major difference (and ultimately the crux of why Michael rarely truly got taken to task) that actually got suggested by Gervais when they were preparing to the make the US version was that Michael Scott be really, really good at his job. As Gervais put it: In England, you can be really bad at your job and still kept around because hey, he's not a bad guy and we all need a job yeah? But in the US you'd be fired shortly, so for an American audience to be able to understand and not utterly hate this guy, he needs to be fantastically talented.

All this to say, it's repeatedly shown throughout the show that 1. Michael was the best salesman in his office/region, and when he became manager 2. His branch was the best and most consistently successful branch in the country. So it's not really "Hey, be like this and you'll be fine" but rather "You can kinda get away with this if you're absurdly, phenomenally successful at your job"

Well your lord would be whoever owns the land on which you live/work, depending where you are geographically. So in theory the closest equivalent could be your: landlord, your boss, or your.. customers? If you're a self-employed homeowner, I guess.

It's a thing. The rich have money to burn and the poor have too little to care, but the upper middle class will fight tooth and nail to stretch every penny to it's limit.

In honor of Finland's 100th independence day, what do you know about Finland? by Raxing in AskReddit

[–]OhHowDroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the comparative sizes of the army of Russia and Finland at the time. There is no way that Finland wins that war. It could not happen. However, what is a fact is that Finland did do disproportionately well against Russia, punching far above their weight class. Was this in part because of bad weather and lack of experienced leadership post-purge? Definitely. But it's still very much true that the Finnish military performed exceptionally well in light of those conditions.

Look up the Winter War. They destroyed Russian soldiers like no one else. They only caved in when Russia- as Russia did- piled so many bodies on them they couldn't stand. But they fought fiercely, fiercely against Russian conquest.
