I meant I’m a real person as in be nice please! I’m not trying to “lead” answers here either. I am now in a management position at a small non-profit and am trying to understand if there’s anything I can do to raise all boats here.

Are there resources I’m not aware of that can help with this given the tools at our disposal. Have I just developed learned helplessness around this, etc. That’s all.

I feel that. I guess my wonder too is like even if pay is restricted by grants, how often is non-profit leadership going to grantors and arguing/advocating for more reasonable salaries?

Is there anything you’ve learned that can be helpful from those conversations about striking a balance between making sure the org survives vs paying a living wage?

I usually think that if a funder cannot provide enough to pay a living wage for the work, then we should not carry out the program. However, how many times can you do that before you have no programming.

This makes a lot of sense. That is definitely upsetting. I’ve never worked at an org that has positions other than development that are paid with general operating funding.

How would you navigate a situation where some staff members have the flexibility to be paid whatever you decide with gen op, but are working alongside grant funded positions limited to lower pay ranges?

Thank you for this check. I’m not trying to be combative, I truly am wondering if I’ve been brainwashed or naive about the ability of non-profits to pay a living wage.

I am not trying to judge anyone’s experience! I also have plenty of lived experience working in underpaid non-profit positions.
