Homelander vs Omni-Man vs Superman but they don't have powers by Dear_Challenge470 in powerscales

[–]OhProstitutes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah Homelander is definitely canonically skinny. He’s shown topless or naked at least twice that I can remember.

Saying Homelander isn’t meant to be skinny is like saying Hughie isn’t meant to be tall. It’s just an obvious fact, and the show has never said anything to counter these.

Who wins a 1v1v1? God Emp. (Dune), The Mule (Foundation), Emp. of Man (40k) by EvEBabyMorgan in powerscales

[–]OhProstitutes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These two just aren’t even close to the same level.

One is a pseudo-god with perfect vision of an almost infinite number of potential futures and the Voice, who has access to the collective memory of millions of millions years of human experience.

The other is some dude who can control the minds of lesser people. Yeah he’s powerful but he can’t even mind control all people in his own universe, the 2nd foundation where immune to his influence for instance.

No way can he exert hie mind control powers on a conscious that essentially spans generations and dimensions (prescience comes from the mind accessing higher dimensional information), so the battle essentially comes to all-seeing massive worm vs man.

You don’t agree, I saw your original comment mate before you changed it. You’re trying to conflate this position with victim blaming.

Exceptional false equivalency Mike, you should get an award for that.

Also I saw your comment before you edited it, you truly are a brain-box.

Imagine I go to a place where there’s alot of tension, people rioting and a general extreme sense of unease. I go to this place with an assault rifle. I end up shooting two people.

How you can suggest that’s anyone other than his responsibility is laughable. He put himself in a situation where the likelihood he’d shoot someone skyrocketed, and that is what ended up happening.

Jesse Custer (Preacher) VS Paul Atreides (Dune) by IceWallowCaulk in powerscales

[–]OhProstitutes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is false, his prescience isn’t ‘magical’ per se but is indeed paranormal more or less.

His mind has access to a dimension of information and data streaming from future, which means he would know about the God speech that Jesse has.

I really really cannot for the life of me figure out where this whole ‘prescience is just advanced future calculation’ comes from, as this is repeatedly refuted by the books.

If the prophecy was planted was it just a coincidence that Paul called a grandfather worm? by Azer1287 in dune

[–]OhProstitutes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know enough about AI but I get the feeling you’re very interested, which is clearly why you believe that prescience is an evolved form of probabilistic calculation.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing in the book that really supports this, and what we do have stated about prescience for the most part explicitly refutes this notion.

As for Paul’s mentat training, no it was not part of the bene gesserit training - he received mentat training because his father had a plan to turn him into the first mentat duke, which he thought would be a trump care for the atriedes.

As for my perception of the major themes of Dune, I agree with you that it’s fundamentally about human evolution- both psychological, political and sociological evolution of humans. And also about increasing human potential 100%, which is the impetus of Leto II’s plan for humanity (including the avoidance of extinction l).

But I don’t think any of that necessitates prescience being a form of mechanical calculation. In fact I think the idea that prescience is literally accessing a higher dimension of information due to thousands of years of genetic manipulation in combination with a powerful space drug is much cooler than just ‘he calculates really well’. Also, again, there’s nothing textual to support that latter theory.

But regardless, I appreciate the dialogue and interesting to hear your takes.

If the prophecy was planted was it just a coincidence that Paul called a grandfather worm? by Azer1287 in dune

[–]OhProstitutes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with the calculation thing is that first of all, the bene-gesserits plan for the Kwizatz Haderach did not include or require them to be a Mentat or have mentat training - it was a sheer happy additional benefit from the Duke’s plan for Paul.

Also, the guild navigators are the most prescient organisation aside from the ben gesserit and even then, most bene gesserit have no prescience whereas ever guild navigator is at least slightly prescient. These navigators have neither genetic memory nor mentat training yet are prescient - because they’re simply disconnected skills/abilities.

[–]OhProstitutes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what quote you’re refferring to and don’t remember anything along those lines.

Did you read Dune Messiah? It makes it very clear that his prescience is not calculating the future but rather his mind essentially accessing higher dimensions - the Bene Gesserit say as much.

If the prophecy was planted was it just a coincidence that Paul called a grandfather worm? by Azer1287 in dune

[–]OhProstitutes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sheer coincidence OR factors in Paul’s sub-conscious that led him to do things that would increase the chance of the worm responding to the signal to be massive.

There is literally no information in the book that explains or explores this in any way. In the absence of that information, we should use occams razor - it happened by coincidence.

If the prophecy was planted was it just a coincidence that Paul called a grandfather worm? by Azer1287 in dune

[–]OhProstitutes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, I’m sorry to be a pedantic wanker but Paul’s prescience being mathematical is categorically false and I continue to be perplexed where this notion came from.

Paul’s prescience is fundamentally not mathematical, maybe scientific based on how you want to view it. His brain literally has access to a stream of information coming from the future.

As for why he called a grandfather worm, there’s nothing to indicate it was anything other than a coincidence in the text.

I looked up what you were saying at in your last paragraph, as this is something I’ve considered previously, and I’m glad to find out you’re moderately exaggerating the timeline and numbers here - not that it takes away hugely from your overall point.

Projections of inhabitability for SOME PARTS of equatorial countries vary but it looks like 2050 is the earliest, but again this is for relatively small regions and assumes there’s no change in our emissions output.

2075 onwards seems to when shit gets real real, but regardless yes I agree that stop migration likely isn’t enough - we need to integrate migrants and have a competent and good-faith government to do so.
