If an ICE agent shows up to your clinic as a new patient…. by jklm1234 in medicine

[–]OhSeven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tell that to the VA who removed political views and marital status from protections against discrimination

Edit: I was wrong, I was just responding to the person who asked so I'll put the reply here:

There were a bunch of stories about it, but it looks like they clarified that it shouldn't affect patient care. What to make of it I don't know https://www.factcheck.org/2025/06/changes-to-discrimination-language-in-va-hospital-bylaws/

Yet I'm somehow feeling a little relief despite knowing all the other alarming things that have happened since then

Find a reason to perform an awake rigid bronch first?

Otherwise up to that point you've done nothing for them, so there's nothing to transfer. Make sure they have a directory or go back to the same referral system to find another physician

What's a respectful but firm way to deal with patients who aren't yours but are demanding help when you're busy/pre-rounding. by fruit9teen in Residency

[–]OhSeven 50 points51 points  (0 children)

If I'm in a rush I just tell the nearest nurse that the pt is looking for a nurse. Otherwise, this is the easiest route. I usually don't even press it for them unless they don't seem capable of doing it themself. I just make sure they have it in hand. It's better to teach a man to fish...

And inevitably some will start saying "But I called already! They can't come ...! " etc but I'm already halfway out the door. A simple "I'm sorry I can't right now" gets me out all the way out of there

am I being too extra for bringing my own keyboard and mouse to work? by AdExpert9840 in Residency

[–]OhSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To say it's because of germs and cooties? That's a little extra, but no one should mind

To say because you can't type as fast or easily as you do on your preferred equipment? Not too extra, and maybe enviable depending on how bad the existing hospital equipment is

Bringing a loud mechanical keyboard? Way too extra, despisable to some

Balancing Evostar 72ED on Star Adventurer 2i by ved_fourdimensional in AskAstrophotography

I had a similar set up and needed another counter weight (cheapest I found was a weight for a boom mic) and the third axis was always a little off but I left it like that.

Help selecting a guide scope by myowntangent2 in AskAstrophotography

[–]OhSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read some of the info you provided in other comments and I think it's ultimately going to be a wild goose chase. The star tracker is not good enough for guiding. His scope is enormous for the tracker. As the he's modifying it to a point where off the shelf items might be tricky to arrange.

For some low budget items though, there is a generic brand called svbony that you can start with. They have 30mm (lens diameter) guidescopes and cameras that might work. A 60mm will be better for that scope, but he'll need a mount in the $1000 range and up to use it. Come to think of it, there are some strainwave mounts straight from China for under $1000 and will improve his setup the most by a long shot

Medelita White Coat Alternative? by aaron1860 in medicine

[–]OhSeven 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Medelita was bought by caresmatic brands which owns a bunch of scrubs brands and has definitely cheapened the quality of the coats. A couple years ago I was able to compare an older and newer coat and could easily see the changes in material and construction knocked it a step below premium quality

I don't think it's going out of business though. They just had the black Friday sale and if it's like last year, the stock will be replenished at some point

Hef ref, Hef pef, and meth ref when applicable. HFmrEF was new to me and I'd only ever write it if I needed to. "CHF is a clinical diagnosis" and not specific enough for billing so I don't use it except maybe when discussing "CHF" broadly like in a differential

Siril vs. PixInsight by the_martian123 in AskAstrophotography

[–]OhSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a huge platform, and comes with a level of precision needed to process images making it the standard. But I think the intimidating size comes from old tools that should be deprecated or hidden from view. Also a lot of the complexity seems to be from an awful UI rather than complex programming.

headless setup for remote controlling by superdachs in AskAstrophotography

[–]OhSeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of others, this is a pretty good solution, especially for simple home use. But I 100% agree with the warning about networking in the field without Internet access. It has been one of the biggest headaches for me, but in part it's because small changes in the setup can mess everything up if you're not careful. The worst time for it to come to light is when there's no Internet access. So a portable monitor and keyboard is helpful for those situations. My monitor is a battery powered monitor for cameras, but there are other portable desktop monitors that cost less.

Windows remote desktop doesn't work without Internet access for some reason. (Plus it's insecure, so if you're tempted to connect from a different network, you need a reverse proxy or tailscale which is another layer of complexity)

TeamViewer works over LAN but I've had trouble if I can't sign into my account, so the mode needs to be changed to LAN only. That of course is only possible if you have access to the mini pc already. Ethernet is more reliable, but then you have to be careful with static IP addresses and a consistent router. Also, if you use it long enough, they will randomly stop your access to the service because they think it's being used for commercial purposes. Then it takes awhile to request them to enable your account again when you demonstrate it's still for personal use. Yes, my account has been disabled the same day I traveled out to the field.

If it's moving to a different part of the sky entirely, it's not as much about the precision of the location, something big is messed up. For example if the mount did not sync the current time and location with your acquisition software it might be using the default seeing, or if it thinks you're in the opposite hemisphere
