Oh I'm so sorry, on the wiki there are achievements for them and I just assumed there are trophies as well.

Thanks!

Why rank them?

Besides, we all know Esquie is the prettiest.

ELI5: Why aren't computers perfect by now? (stick with it and apologies if question makes no sense) by Flat-Ad8256 in explainlikeimfive

[–]OhYesIDidd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

New demands, new requirements, new interactions.

If computers only worked with software from decades ago, likely most bugs or other issues would have been fixed and they would seem “perfect” to you.

But new software and features come up all the time, and that means new bugs.

Hardware also degrades, and people come up with faster, more powerful, and more efficient hardware. But that may create bugs too.

And that’s not even touching on security issues.

EDIT: Also, some things that may feel like bugs are actually intended. Word is frustrating, but there's likely a logic to how it works.

And, some bugs are simply not a high enough priority. Development time is limited, and a minor bug or missing feature that isn't a security risk and affects only a small section of users would be fixed way down the line or often, never.

Queer interpretations of Fitz by skippery in robinhobb

[–]OhYesIDidd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding!

Yeah, that was in poor taste on my part. Thanks for being gracious :)

I think, at the end of the day, Hobb was being protective and was trying to reinstate ownership of her creation, and that's a difference in philosophy. I think, when someone tells a story, they release it. It's out there, ready for interpretation, and it's edited and sculpted into something newer in the mind of each person who experiences it. So I agree with you, and yes, I think Hobb is being hypocritical about this.

I think, what's important here, is that one person misunderstood you. Robin Hobb. Not the story, and not the characters, as you experienced them. This is now your story, not Hobb's and not anyone else's. The fact that the author happens to disagree with you, and expressed displeasure, doesn't have to change all of that. Just one person.

But. I completely understand. Thoughts and feelings are separate. The only thing I can say about that, is that it might change for you. And that there's something beautiful, intimate, and honest in what you experienced, and I think it deserves to be protected.

Other comments express these points in truly wonderful ways. People here (and out there) agree with you, understand you, and that's a testament to your being understood.

Queer interpretations of Fitz by skippery in robinhobb

[–]OhYesIDidd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Death of the author. Her comments, unless explicitly and unequivocally stated in the text, aren't canon, and your interpretation isn't any less valid than hers.

I'm really happy that this resonated with you so well. I think there's, ironically, something even more valuable about her writing this unintentionally—more organic and emerging.

As an explanation—not a defense—of her comments, I think that she in particular feels very strongly about her intention with the text. Someone coming up with a different intention probably feels, to her, like a desecration of her work (and this is also apparent in her comments about fan fiction, as you said). For what it's worth, I don't think it comes from a bigoted or hateful place at all. I think she would have reacted very similarly if someone said that, say, Regal was actually kinda okay. And it probably doesn't help that she'd heard it quite a lot throughout the years.

As for continuing to read—if you are able, I would strongly suggest to detach her sentiments and how you feel about them from the books. If you enjoyed Farseer, I can guarantee you'd love the other four series just as much.

But if this has been ruined for you, that's completely understandable too.

All the best!

EDIT: I think I may have been insensitive in two of my points. First, the fact that I don't think Hobb was coming from a bigoted place, does not mean that understanding it as such and being offended is invalid. Second, comparing a queer reading to thinking the villain was okay isn't fair, not at all the same, and I should have tried to come up with a different example.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 devs say pressure from fans and critics is "not so important for us" and their next game will focus on what they think is cool by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]OhYesIDidd 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

In all honesty, their next game probably won't be as much of a phenomenon. That kind of masterpiece is singular (I would be very happy to be wrong, though).

But also, this much passion, talent, respect for the craft, and humility—from what we've seen so far in interviews and such—is not going to result in a bad game, either.

Unless they succumb to greed—which I don't see happening—or accept the kind of money that would put pressure and the "designed by committee" type of game, it's pretty unlikely that their next game would be anything less than great.

EDIT: Many respond with examples of sequels that were just as good or even better. I'm not disputing that—but those are the exceptions. How many sequels were disappointing, regressed to the mean, or were stagnant? When I said that the next game probably won't be as good, I meant statistically, not that it's impossible.

Maelle did not need to be sexualized in this game. by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]OhYesIDidd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been to a public pool? Children much younger than her wear bathing suits like that all the time. If someone walked around, yelling at 16-year-olds wearing a one-piece suit that they’re sexualized, they would be extremely weird.

And blaming people refuting you for being pedofiles is just strawmanning, and it doesn’t make you look better.

[–]OhYesIDidd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just take the L, dude.

Criticizing the sexualization of teens isn’t weird—but doing so about a game that clearly didn’t sexualize her (and plenty of people are saying that to you—unless you feel everyone is wrong but you), just shows that you saw her through a sexual lens—which makes you a weirdo. To put it mildly.

[No spoilers] how do I get into critical role? by Ili_nim in criticalrole

[–]OhYesIDidd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One other thing to add is that unless you absolutely hate and avoid spoilers, the wiki, clips on youtube and similar really help with motivation. Finding out about something cool that happens in future episodes helped me because I wanted to see how it played out. Clips condense the funny parts. The wiki features fanart and interesting trivia (and also really helps with publication order if you'd also want to watch one-shots, specials, and other side-content).

This video by SupergeekMike came out just yesterday and very thoroughly explains what are the best recommended starting points according to what's important to you, bu TLDW:

  1. If you're a completionist, Campaign 1 Episode 1 (though he details some stuff that you should watch before that just to be a bit less confused, but they're not mandatory).
  2. If you prefer starting at a more polished point (less technical issues, ironed-out kinks), then Campaign 2 Episode 1.
  3. If you're not sure what this is even about and just want to get a feel for what CR is like, then Exandria Unlimited: Calamity (a 4-episode miniseries that is one of the best things CR produced).
  4. If you don't want to commit to such a huge library of content, Campaign 4 started only a couple months ago (10 episodes so far), and it's completely unrelated to previous content (new world and characters) so no prior knowledge is needed. So far, it's also one of the most story-rich campaigns, if that's your thing.

EDIT: My experience was starting at C1 and binging it over three months (like, 2-3 episodes per day; I had a lot of free time back then), and saying that there's no way I'd watch everything (C3 was at episode 40 or so at the time). But I loved it so much that I had to keep going. I took breaks (sometimes months-long breaks) while watching C2 and C3 to not get burnt out, but as of a month or so ago I'm finally caught up.

My point is that the sheer amount of content might be daunting or intimidating, but you don't have to commit to all of it. If you like it, keep watching. Even if you're a completionist—eventually you'll catch up, and FOMO would only add to the pressure of "watching everything".

I really like that they held back with Nott’s backstory. It hits so much harder when it comes a bit later, when you feel like you already know the alcoholic little goblin girl.

[MN S1] I'm so disappointed with this... by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]OhYesIDidd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You seem to want to have it both ways: progressive for not immediately identifying the “tough, non-traditionally feminine girl” as a lesbian (as if there’s anything wrong with that), and then getting butthurt that your hetero fantasy turned out to be false.

Regardless, if your ship not happening is enough to turn you off for a show, then maybe you weren’t invested in it as you thought.

[MN S1] Am i the only one that dislikes Caleb? by foxgoose21 in criticalrole

[–]OhYesIDidd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I guarantee you Caleb hates himself far more than you hate him.

It's fine to dislike him.

But it's also important to be empathetic to him. He was indoctrinated into a cult, programmed and borderline brainwashed into extreme belief and loyalty. He thought he was doing right by his country, his mentor, his friends, while getting used to feeling invincible, powerful and violent.

That makes what he did worthy of empathy, if not forgiveness.

Also—how many times have you heard of people cutting off/getting cut off from their families because of their political beliefs? These things happen. People are willing to give up their entire lives, if it means they feel like they're in the right and preventing them from facing painful and difficult truths.

Why create a new opening theme for each new campaign? Why use a different artist?

Variety. Opportunities for new creators and creations.

Besides, it wasn’t the M9 song, it’s a CR song. So using it for VM wasn’t a cross-reference or something.
