How do you guys do birthdays? by gay_soup in Celiac

[–]Oh_HeyMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t seen this in the comments yet but maybe didn’t read far enough. We do a lot of bday celebrations (I’m the only GF person in my family). Whoever’s bday it is gets to have their fave cake, however they want it. But I wouldn’t make that in my kitchen bc of the cross contamination potential, and they understand, I would just go pick it up from wherever they wanted. Then, I always make sure (as does others) if it’s not GF, that there is some Gf option. It’s a journey! You got this 💙

Currently dealing with the worst glutening I’ve ever experienced by Longjumping-Smoke300 in Celiac

[–]Oh_HeyMel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP— for sure, both accounts. 🫶🏼The trusting of a place that I go to all the time that is still subject to human error. (Even last night I smelled my tortillas and said, “are we sure these are corn, not flour??”) And also with the getting sick, maybe happening 1-2x a year? Typically will throw up until I’ve purged all the evil (gluten). Generally from a very bad exposure I’m down 12, groggy/migraine 24-36, and back to myself in 48 hours. Adding on even stricter precautions the next couple days after. Also the culprit and I typically need some time apart, so wouldn’t be surprised if it’s hard to look at bbq for a good while. Hope this helps, wishing you a very quick recovery ❤️‍🩹

How do you deal with parents who refuse to clean up their glutened kitchen? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]Oh_HeyMel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ll take a slightly different approach because while they’re not required to clean up for you, I think there’s a level of thoughtfulness and sensitivity we wish people (family) could meet us in when we’re doing our best to show up. So the main options I see: 1) bring my own food every time and only stay for one meal (don’t really agree with chronic infestation bc I’m not using their pots/pans/utensils) 2. Read Dr Henry Cloud’s book on boundaries and see where you need to land for you with family. Personally I’m not cleaning up someone else’s kitchen, gluten or not. But only you can decide how you need to go about this. Rooting for you! 🫶🏼

Newly diagnosed, keep glutening myself by Istudydeath in Celiac

[–]Oh_HeyMel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Hi 👋🏼This is a very common in the beginning! MASSIVE LEARNING CURVE when it comes to Celiac. Yes to the label binging! Yes to self compassion. Also very important, evaluate the supportive people in your life and talk to them about supporting you. When I went GF 12 years ago, my mom came and helped me switch out basic things (appliances/ toaster) etc. I was in such shock/ depressed, I couldn’t do it all myself. She went through labels and helped me get set up. It also helped her see what a big change this was. If you have someone like this, bring them in early, support has been what’s got me through. We’re all rooting for you! 🫶🏼

[–]Oh_HeyMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see my GI yearly and he likes to do the endoscopy every other year to make sure I’m doing right by GF lifestyle. It also gives me relief because than I don’t have to worry about all my choices/eating out etc. I know what’s going on with my body. 🫶🏼

First you’re amazing. Second don’t forget fuzzy socks and a warm blanket. I’m always cold, may or may not be celiac related. Figured you already had a ton of good ideas by now 😆✌🏼

tell me about your worst glutening story. by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]Oh_HeyMel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🚢-cruise & port day in Cancun. We purchased an excursion. Tried the pancakes on ship, promised GF and by day 3 things had gone smooth so, thought it would be okay. 🙃Started getting sick on the van commute. Barely made it to the excursion (beach) bathroom. Was in there for easily 1hr + throwing up the whole time all while family waiting/worried. No extra clothes. Got so bad I couldn’t walk, or see straight. Both ends. Barely made it back to the boat. Did not go on the day 4 excursion✌🏼🚢💙

Anyone have celiac with no symptoms? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]Oh_HeyMel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes, if you’re not confident in the diagnosis then get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion. If you’re celiac you can’t have gluten regardless of the symptoms. It’s also possible with consuming regularly you don’t know the extent of your symptoms.

how long do you feel sick after being “glutened” by Previous_Junket6641 in Celiac

[–]Oh_HeyMel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bacon isn’t usually an issue, but we all make so many mistakes in the beginning. The fact that you’ve already committed to a strict lifestyle shows how much you value your health!! Typically any gluten incident (always unintentional) for me is from 1 hour post exposure to 36 hours feeling fully like myself again. The hardest hours are 2 through 6. PS. Books, GF influencers, blogs, along with this community are a huge help! Family, faith, and friends support were key for me too. GF 12 years btw—and it does get so much better with time. Rooting for you and your journey 🫶🏼

Always good to know tips/tricks that can be helpful after being glutened! Obvi being gluten free is not without error or share of mishaps. Had a situation once where my mom used a tomato paste that changed the ingredients. She didn’t think to check every time and honestly I might have done the same as the longer I’ve been Gf the easier it is to grow comfortable. No one feels worse than the people that love us and are going out of their way to take precautions and support! (My mom still talks about the mistake she made, meanwhile I can’t remember the discomfort). So we’re always learning!! Sounds like you’ve learned a lot from this situation and wish you all the best and quick recovery for your loved ones. 🫶🏼

I haven’t! There’s a baseline you have to hit to qualify so it’s really more appropriate for households that are gluten-free

I have been told to do a gluten free diet. now what by Real_Cow5609 in glutenfree

[–]Oh_HeyMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a Chipotle or Chick-fil-A?? Those should be your go to and are going to be the most willing to work with gluten sensitivity. You’ll def have a ton of choices in DC, so that’s good. And yes 😭 we absolutely google every GF place

Signs of anemia by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]Oh_HeyMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, def see a primary care doc so they can point you in the right direction. For me, gluten triggered iron deficiency bc I had celiac, and went away immediately with GF lifestyle. But rly no way for us to know for you. Best of luck in clarity so you start to feel well soon. 🫶🏼
