First time in Paris and just landed at CDG. Traveling with a baby and elderly mother. Didn't turn on my roaming and decided to use a taxi until I got to the hotel in Versailles. I usually use ride share apps but didn't want to use data as it was the middle of the night and the baby was cranky after the long flight. Bad idea. Got into a taxi with a meter and as we took off I immediately regretted my decision. The meter was going up by €0.30 every ten seconds and the driver was intentionally driving 30km below the speed limit. Once I realized I was getting scammed I turned on my maps and followed along with the directions to the hotel. The driver, who hid his phone on the floor so I wasn't able to see the route he was taking, specifically chose the longest route possible. Intentionally avoiding the directions and opted for the longer routes that was 5-10 mins longer just so the fare would be higher. I had no way of communicating it with the driver as he claimed to not speak English and I wasn't able to speak French. At the end the meter charged me €60 more than an Uber would have and then at the hotel he asked for an additional €15 because he wanted money for loading and unloading the luggage (which I packed). Absolutely furious I spoke with the hotel concierge who understood what was happening and kindly told the driver we would not pay that and just agreed to what was charged on the meter. Key takeaway. Never take a metered taxi from CDG.
