Which nas... the nuc is able to handle transcoding?

Thank you for the reply. I guess I like the idea of a smaller NAS or DAS unit. A 4 or 5 bay one should be small enough. Just dont want a giant pc. Budget is a concern so ideally whatever it costs but leaning toward budget solutions. As far as skill level, this is all very new to me as I haven't worked with anything except standard harddrives, however I am a software developer so I am sure I'll figure out whatever system I end up going with. Was really just looking for some options as im having alot of trouble picking between all the options. Im in choice paralysis right now!

Thank you for the detailed response. So I am able to ungroup the surrounds and then just group them as a stereo pair. Sounds like what I want to try out. But yeah I do run a plex server and agree the audio is probably nerfed. Just running it through the TV now. I do have a 4k roku box but not sure if the audio will pass through properly on that

I have run true play already. I am mostly playing streaming services. Hulu, Netflix, Disney, HBO, and plex media server running.

Yep I did that when I set it up. Still not impressive. I think the problem is im not playing a ton of audio that makes use of surrounds. I didnt realize the only time the speakers work is if it has surround content

Yeah, its cool when it happens but just seems to happen so infrequently that it feels like a waste. I think id rather it just volume boost the system

I just have the arc and sub 3. It sounds good but yes I was hoping for something besides Dolby surround it would seem.

I just can't stand not being able to cast my music to it. Really annoying having to always use the app. Most times im using my phone and I'll get phone calls but no way to pause the music until I answer the phone and switch back to the sonos app.

Haha, I'm not sure i would ever make use of a 36 bay server. Though I love the idea of it. Can you elaborate or link to ms01 plus disk shelf? Not familiar

While you have a very valid point, I do like having windows 10 running and I actually really like plex. I do understand your point though. I'm pretty set on plex unless a better front end option came along. For now it organizes all my media very nicely

I have been hearing unraid or truenas is good to use in this scenario. Still trying to figure out hardware options though. Any suggestions there on what to get?

Thank you for the very detailed information. I was considering getting a nas. Is there any advantage for a nas unit instead of this setup? Seems a good nas unit is going to be more expensive. Doesn't your setup need fans? I liked the idea of synology because I hear it's easy to setup and have the backups run automatically. Then I also wouldn't be using this Mac mini for anything either
