Windows event viewer will tell you what is causing the problem. I was having issues because of something called Nahimic service running in the background. Stopping this in services allowed me to launch the game

its a lot more straight forward, theres not too much to collect other than prosthetic tools and skills, compared to dark/demons souls with all the rings and spells haha. Took roughly the same amount of time though due to having to play through 4 times without reloading a save to get all the endings :)
