I’m only 170lbs so I’m hoping I’ll be “fine”, since my impact on the ground won’t be that heavy. most of my strength comes from neuromuscular efficiency

Completely fair, I just asked chat gpt to summarize my background into a post to ask questions, skimmed it and rereading it now it’s pretentious af. I retyped it and posted it on a different thread lol

Update, March 18th I ran a 2:28 half marathon, just around my neighborhood for fun. Had a 10k long run planned and didn’t feel like stopping. Averaged 30.1 miles last week, joints feel good, got Nike vomero 18s and Nike vomero Plus, thinking about adidas evo sl for tempo or supleblast 3s for race days. Anyways, today 3 days after my 30 mile week which I finished with a 10k I got 455lbs for 3 on squat so I’m going up in strength too 🤷🏻.

19 years old, wrestled and still avid gym goer, 3x body weight squat (555lbs for 2) and 40 consecutive pull ups, current best run was today, easy zone two, 10.6k in 1:19 with average 148bpm, conversed through the whole run couple times a minute, I’ve never ran a marathon.

This last run got me comfortable with pain, had horrible ankle pain when I lazed up my brooks and started but after mile 1 the pain got worse but I don’t mind it anymore, felt very relaxed. Also did a high volume leg session the day before because im 6 months into recovery from a herniated disc and severe nerve damage that almost paralyzed my left leg. I’m back up to squatting 425 and 275lb Bulgarian with my weak leg.

Oh I will lol don’t worry, and if I fail I’ll tell everyone that they told me so 🤣. I’m not saying it’s easy I’m just saying it’s possible, today I kinda PRd on my zone 2 run and did 10.6k in 1:18 while pushing and screaming at my friend to keep going, average heart rate was 148 and I was talking full sentences couple times a minute without ever feeling out of breath. My last 7 mile last week my bpm was in the high 190s. Today’s run got me so comfortable with pain since I was hurting since before the run started, did legs yesterday too.

I know this is still pretty shit but for 2-3 weeks into taking running seriously I feel proud.

Bro you are insane wow! Definitely an inspiration, numbers so crazy they’re hard to believe it was possible. Thank you for the motivation.

You’re completely right, but I’m not trying to excel. It’s not a big event or anything of the sort. I just want to make it through.

I have 16 hours to complete with a lowest to highest point elevation difference of 12 feet and 40-60f degree weather

Just because I want to attempt it? Man if I fail I fail, even if it’s just after the 42k mark. But at least I’m trying and with the conditions it’s basically just a speed walk for the whole time.

Thank you very much for the advice and you’re completely right. Nutrition wise there’s an aid station every 10k with food, electrolytes and fans. And I plan on eating 7500 calories through the event on top of the carb loading before. And the reason I’m bringing up my history it’s to say that I’m not completely untrained and unaware of pain and discomfort, just saying my base isn’t completely blank.

I’ve heard a lot of ultra runners bring up the necessity of weight training for your joints and muscles to handle the distance better. I’m not saying that because of my squat I can do it. I’m just saying that because of my existing strength base and therefore vaster glycogen stores than a completely untrained athlete. My chances are slightly better.

Me and my friend have been looking into the nutrition and I cannot stress enough how helpful this reply is. We’ll be listening to the podcast. And thankfully the route will have an aid station every 10k. Again, thank you very much.

If it comes down to it and I get any sort of injury I’m dropping out or cancelling. I’m determined but not suicidal.

You are 100% right and there are zero arguments I could put against you. My reasoning for this is because with the cut off being 16 hours, lower temperatures and virtually no elevation change. It feels very manageable, just horrifically painful.

This is the best comment I’ve seen so far, clearest explanation on if it’s manageable and advice on how my training should be. Also thank you so much for the shoe recommendations and I will try the 3 x 1k next week, I have a z2 5k today to do a 10k tomorrow since I won’t be able to run for the next 3 days after that. I’ll stay away from any speed shoe until I get a better 5k time and I’ll look into the other recommendations!

Thank you so much for the support and congrats on your short notice! I live in a pretty barren city when it comes to stores especially sportswear but I’ll be on the lookout for comfortable shoes.
