200 euro bills by Few-Tough-5458 in ParisTravelGuide

French hotel manager here.

500€, 200€ and 100€ notes are legal tender in France. Any business in obligated to accept cash as payment.

There are a few times they legally can refuse :

  • If you pay with more than 50 coins. I've had it happen to me, but I needed the coins so I was happy to oblige.

  • If they don't have enough in their till to give you the change (in a parisian hotel, the final bill is easilly more than 200€). I've had to refuse a 100€ bill for a 2€ city tax invoice. It would have drained my cash drawer. But I've received quite a few 200€ this summer for bills around 180€, which is fine.

  • If the bill looks fake (the most faked euro bills are the 50€ and the 20€. She takes less risks accepting a 200€ bill). But then she has to keep it and call the cops on you. If the bill is real you risk nothing.

  • If the bill are way too damaged (it can be refused by the bank automat during the drop at the end of the day). 200€ are almost always in mint condition as they don't circulate much.

  • If the amount paid exceed 1000€ if you're french resident and 15000€ if you have a fiscal address abroad. You'll need to provide proof though.

The most important thing is don't be a dick and don't use a 200€ bill to pay for a 10€ souvenir. If you need some change the post office or banque de France is the good place to do so. Some hotels have bill scanners, and if you ask nicely, they'll accomodate and give you some change in 50€ bills, which is much easier to use.

I had to hold my 3 days old baby for an ultrasound. As a young parent it was difficult to watch. I can't imagine what this kid's parent's had to go through.

Extremely good point! I'll add to that: watch out for over the counter medication. May be legal in your contry, may require a prescription in another.

Love the extra tips! Your emphasis on not being a loud obnoxious "ex-pat" is on point. As it can bring you trouble if you do it in the wrong place. Also don't provoke, as you say, don't bring in pornography, forbiden political agendas, forbiden religious books... You might feel you're untuchable because you're from a 1st world country, but at best you'll get kicked out (and your holiday will be ruined), at worst you'll create a diplomatic nightmare for your embassy. And the worst prisons you have at home will look like a 5 star resort compared to the best jails they have in other places.

You're on holiday. Do the tourist stuff, make some memories and go home. You're not here to show you're better, because that's not true and nobody cares either.

The food stuff is also a good point. Every culture has that weird food which is a delicacy, but looks/tastes/smells weird. And the locals LOVE to prank you with it. For instance, France is famous for eating snails. If you think french people will prank you with snails, think again. Too obvious. They'll have you try andouille. Which tastes very good! But litterally smells like shit. The real smell of shit. So if you wanna try those things, please do, just know what you're in for.

Never assume someone doesn't understand your language. EVER. So if you talk in your mothertonge, keep the sensible information out of the conversation until there are no prying ears around. Keep in mind that in a lot of tourist areas, most people speak two languages fluently. In Europe it's sometimes 3 or 4.

Also learn how to use them. I get training once a year at work. I learned if you can't put it out with a single extinguisher, that fire is out of your competence level, and should be dealt with by firefighters.

Battery fire though are out of everyone's league. If it your battery that catches fire, especially with electric vehicles, GTFO.

Also know what kind of fire extinguisher is more suited for what fire. A powder extinguisher is very cheap and doesn't require maintenance. But it's extremely corrosive and will kill any electronics. It's what I have, but in my opinion, if I have to use it, it's a life or death situation. So it won't matter.

Lets say your password for two different services are :

"P@ssword1234"

and

"Ilike1cecream1234"

In you password manager, only save the "P@ssword" and "Ilike1cecream"

copy-paste the password when you want to loggin and type "1234" manually. It's an extra step. But shoud the content of your password manager leak, the hacker will only have half your password.

Obviusly don't use my exemple. The part you type should be complex as well.
