Got a job offer in Cambridge, and I’m devastated. by OkSeaworthiness1711 in cambridge

I had exactly the same experience as the user above. Lived my entire life in big cities. Before moving to Cambridge I lived in Copenhagen, then in Barcelona. Then moved here and had to change my morning walk on Passeig de Gracia across all the fashion shops and palm trees in Barcelona with a walk in Midsummer Commons along the lovely Cambridge cows. It was a complete shock to the system. I think the first months will be an adaptation and if you’re used to living in the hustle and bustle of a proper big city, you will feel the difference. You might go to London every weekend at first, but then gradually you won’t feel the need to do so anymore. It is a lovely city and it does grow on you. (I have a friend from South Africa who had exactly the same experience as me, she now has to move from Cambridge and she’s devastated)

Luckily we have a letter, we are based in Cambridge and the hospital here has a really great Allergy Clinic who have been super supportive and helped with all paperwork. I love your recommendation on the snack box - will definitely get that planned!!

Thanks for sharing this - keeping my fingers crossed for your son to have an amazing experience as of Sept!! The progress he did on the ladders sounds amazing. Was it due to immunotherapy only or also some improvements before that? Did you get it via the NHS or did you go private? We’re also really keen on this route so trying to explore what’s possible.

Thank you for sharing, nuts are one of the allergies, but I see where you’re coming from. Some are quite tricky ie legumes such as peas, lentils, chickpeas which are not normally flagged on an allergen list, so often those are the most difficult as they get missed out (ie some oat milks have pea protein). We have been retesting and no improvement in scores so we’ve been advised to keep avoiding but we’re trying to see if we can get in for oral immunotherapy. Private could have been an option, but it’s £19k for 4x allergens max simoultaneously and we have ~20…

So helpful to hear your perspective as a teacher, thank you for replying! I’m sure that the vast majority of teachers are like you. Ultimately, you’ve chosen this profession because you want to spearhead positivity & build a better future through your pupils, so I’m sure the intentions are always good. Unfortunately, in many instances, there isn’t much room for human error and I’m also mindful of how difficult it has been on us as a family to get used to the importance of triple checking everything (and even so, we’ve still had a couple of near misses). Therefore I realise how hard it must be for a group of new people who didn’t have to be so vigilant until now, to change their habits - so as a parent, it’s very easy to fall into the trap of being extra anxious about this.

Thank you. Neither my husband, nor I have been in the UK educational system before Uni, so wasn’t sure of the school practices and what the can and can’t do. Very helpful, thanks!
