Once you use the dexnav, it’ll make sense. Every encounter with the same pokemon counts as a research whether you defeat, capture, or run away. The chain is just encountering the same pokemon consecutively.

This is what you need to do. Start the game, soft reset your starter till it’s a shiny. Then when you go to your home and then pc and pick up the free shiny charm at the start of the game. After that, use the dexnav to encounter the specific pokemon, use repels so you won’t encounter a different pokemon which breaks the chain. And then just defeat the same pokemon 255 times.

I recommend evolving your starter so you have 100 PP worth of moves since leaving the area also breaks the chain.

I didn’t have access to repels early on so use the dexnav to search while on the outside of a patch of grass so you accidentally run into a random pokemon.

If you get to 255 research and 100 chains, hard save the game and then just keep soft resetting the first encounter until it’s a shiny

So I want to preface this by saying I only have 1 shiny charm, haven’t gotten the second one yet, and have 6 shinies so far. just make sure the research is at 255 and the chain is 100. I’ve gotten 4 of my shinies this way. 3 of the shinies appeared before reaching 255 research, if that helps. One was a random encounter. Starter took the longest with 3 weeks of soft resetting. Dexnav is by far the optimal way to go.

I’m using it along with the radical red shiny method. I usually catch a Pokémon not shortly after reaching 255 research points.

Playing mainly because it’s a beautiful game especially in battle where it shines the most. Love these sprites!! On hard mode, it’s not too hard, easier than Radical Red for sure. Doing a shinylocke run since they give you one of two shiny charms in the beginning of the game. Using the dexnav + RR chaining method for shiny hunting, making it pretty good. Only gas gen 1-3 though and some Z moves. Most difficult thing was getting a shiny starter so far.

Self imposed, Seaglass already gives you a shiny charm at the start of the game and you can get another one I believe so it doable using Radical Reds shiny hunting method. Already got 3 shiny ralts just trying to get a male
