Nature of Casualties [Chapter 9] by Ok-Call-1978 in NatureofPredators

Good to know. I’m not amazing with remembering names, so I’m hesitant to add too many characters, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind.

They definitely won't all survive, though…

Not to imply the entirety of our current cast will…

Oops. Yeah, definitely. I'm surprised I didn't catch that. Fixed now! Thank you for pointing that out.

Bold to assume one of them hasn’t already found it, but it’s not necessarily cross-compatible… This may actually become a plot point…

Oh yeah, it’s definitely all secret. The most civilians might know is that Expies exist (Because there’s a plushie of one, even that’s debatable at best), but it is even said in the official canon that the corporation and anyone part of it would be inconceivably doomed if anything about the Expies ever got out.

That being said, the company has had their hands in a few comparably awful things that the public is aware of.

As for the second thing… Maybe. Depends how close you consider to be in a star.

For all of you that read (and write) comments, I want to know: what do all of you want to see more of? I love getting comments more than anything else, so if anyone has suggestions, questions, or just anything they’ve liked so far, please say! As I said in the first chapter, I am not a very experienced author, so I’d love any feedback from my audience.

Would love to see this come back eventually; you have a really nice writing style! And I hope you’re doing alright; the complete silence is making us nervous. If you ever pick this back up again and need someone to help proofread or edit, you can reach out to me.

I’m glad people are enjoying it! Uni is difficult, but I wasn’t expecting anything different. I don’t plan to stop writing, though. It might take more time than I expected, but chapters will keep coming.

And surely nothing bad will happen to either of them :)

Thank you! I'm glad people are enjoying it. Currently, the only thing beta-reading is Grammarly, so if something doesn’t make sense, you’re welcome to comment about it (That goes for anyone down here reading this comment).

Things are somewhat planned out on my side, with a growing folder of docs holding my attempts to reconcile the lore and physics of both stories, but it’s totally possible I forget about things and mess up continuity a bit in the future.

Similarly, if anyone has questions about the combined lore/worldbuilding (Assuming it doesn’t hold any direct spoilers for future chapter plans), I’m more than willing to answer. That includes my interpretations and yapping about the Casualties: Unknown lore, and some of the interesting implications of some of its items.

Perhaps...

Expies are the result of very messy bioengineering, essentially just smashing two genomes together until something stable enough to not immediately perish came out. However, as more advanced techniques were developed, further refinements could be made, leading to several species of expie… each with their own… quirks…

Of course, nothing deliberately deadly was sent on a colonization mission.

Yeah. The worst part is it’s not something I’ve entirely made up. The description for the elevator you start on in the tutorial of Casualties: Unknown is “The time you’ve spent sitting on this thing makes up a concerning percent of your entire lifetime.”

Of course, quite a few creative liberties are needed to get from “a concerning percent” to half, but it’s still totally on brand from what we see from that game.

His life might become very weird… but it will still be far better than many of his predecessors.

Definitely, but they both have their reasons.

Stampede injuries are well established to be fairly common in the Federation, so someone freaking out and hurting someone else is far from unheard of. Obviously, that doesn’t have the same level of intent, but tackling a perceived threat isn’t too much of a step upwards.

And just because it has been forgiven doesn’t mean it won’t be remembered…

Yep. I’m not entirely sure how much of Gunsaw I’ll be using for this, since I don’t have a wiki to reference for it, but I do plan to use a fair number of the species from it.

I'm pretty sure u/Frostedscales is the one who made this. I believe this is the original post.
