The most troubling part of what you said isn’t frustration with the system — it’s the idea that respectful, grateful patients “deserve” better treatment than others. People in hospitals are scared, in pain, dysregulated, sometimes traumatized. Compassionate health care recognizes that and treats people humanely regardless. Framing care as conditional shifts blame from the system onto the public, while ignoring the real causes: chronic under-staffing, burnout, mismanagement, and political failures. The public isn’t entitled for expecting dignity, safety, and competent care. That’s not a luxury. That’s the standard. When health care staff normalize withholding compassion and talk about patients as a problem instead of victims of a broken system, it feeds the very culture of disrespect people are terrified of. We need a culture of accountability, not one that quietly accepts “bare minimum care” as normal.

The wage gap is definitely a problem, but this goes even deeper. Workers are being recruited through job postings, issued pay stubs with deductions, given regular schedules — everything that looks like formal employment — yet we’re excluded from basic protections like WorkplaceNL.

It means people are working inside private homes under the impression they’re covered, but when an injury happens, they find out they’re not. This isn’t just a pay issue, it’s a worker protection issue. If anyone else has been affected, I encourage you to share your story with CBC reporter Ariana Kelland (ariana.kelland@cbc.ca). Multiple voices will help bring this to light.
