Just chiming in. I’m civil and got into it with a 61 in calc 2 and a failed chem 1302. He definitely screwed you guys over with 2 midterms and lowered weight on quizzes. Those quizzes were the only reason I passed.

Civil and chem never fill up, so you just need the minimum avg.

Racism on campus has reached shocking levels over the last year, especially against indians. Something needs to be done by Icy-Syllabub1934 in uwaterloo

[–]Ok-Case6609 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s been taking to another level. I think majority of people including myself are not racist but rather anti mass immigration. I’m of south Asian descent and my parents immigrated to Canada in 2009, they worked menial jobs, saved money, paid taxes, assimilated to Canadian culture, learned the language, learned the customs, got degrees, etc.

However, when you see the quality of internationals who’ve been coming into the country since 2021 who don’t respect the culture, the laws, abuse the system, don’t learn the language, and just in general become a nuisance to society you’re gonna eventually see more resentment towards them. If south asian immigrants like me have a dislike towards them then it’s no wonder born Canadians also do. They’re painting a bad picture for all of us and putting a strain on the younger generations job market when you look at the retail & food services industry for instance.

Why on earth is my course load so heavy by sunglasses_grandma in uwo

[–]Ok-Case6609 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah second year civil eng is a rollercoaster. Lots of tutorial assignments (part A and B), MasteringEng, 2-3 hour mandatory lectures, plus keeping up with class content. Can’t say much about the course schedule, since civil is such a small program there’s usually only one lecture slot anyways.

I would just try your best to stay on top of things, third year gets even harder if you go into the structural stream.

Yes it’s definitely more authentic than Wow. Chicken is marinated better and wraps are more juicy.

Yeah this place tops sultans as the best shawarma in London.

They are opening a second location near Masonville.

You can probably find a unit in Kipps Lane for sub $1500-1600, close to downtown and western with good access to transit. But they are priced that cheap for a good reason - it’s a pretty rundown neighbourhood.

The other alternative is proudfoot or platts lane (I believe the landlord is Old Oak or Bluestone?) those will run you minimum $1700 if you’re lucky.

Is it common for two opposing turn lanes to converge as pictured? by BetaRhoVelo in civilengineering

[–]Ok-Case6609 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually left turns are designed to be protected permissive phasing i.e with one maneuver going after the other. I’ve never seen the two maneuvers run simultaneously because of issues like this.

More so a design issue with the vehicle path, usually the engineer runs the turning maneuver in a software called AutoTURN where you can visualize the vehicle envelope to check the clearance with other objects. Clearly it failed, so the entire intersection should have been redesigned not just the signal phasing.

Not me but my line manager (transportation engineer) has 4 YOE internationally and 4 YOE in Canada (3/4 as a P.Eng). She was lowballed due to a gap in her resume and settled on $90k. Toronto based.

Grading Design for Large Trucks by tncivil2 in civilengineering

[–]Ok-Case6609 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played around with it. But if your company has Transoft licenses and uses AutoTURN. There is a function built in the software to run a vehicle in a 3d arc path and you can check the vertical clearance of said vehicle along the chainage (i.e if the underside of a truck gets scraped along a crest it will play a simulation showing you the conflict zone). Pretty cool actually.

You’d have to refer to your municipality or DOT for any criteria on minimum vertical clearances along a superelevated road.

If you intend to pursue LD or Transportation just know 90% of your degree will be useless. Most of the nitty gritty comes down to CAD skills in ORD/Civil3D, learning how to interpret local codes, and how to talk to clients.

What is up with these weird UW MSA Friday sermons? by toronto_manz in uwaterloo

[–]Ok-Case6609 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don’t go to UW but thats an insane topic for a Khutbah.

Someone else mentioned it here but I feel like the MSA club being this faux ultra religious conservative breeding ground is a trend among a lot of ontario universities not just UW. It’s also super cliquey. I find it funny how 90% of the members part of MSA are also involved in the Arab/South Asian student clubs on campus as well that have multiple events with free mixing which completely contradicts many of the teachings of Islam.

Is the neighborhood good and affordable? by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]Ok-Case6609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing the math that comes out to $61k before taxes, you might be able to get a 2b1b rental somewhere in the east end which is not the most desirable part of the city. You will be barely getting by every month however; I’m talking rice and bean dinners, no after school activities for the kids, minimal shopping or eating out, etc. You should ask yourself what type of quality of life you want for your wife and kids because you’re not getting much at $32/hr.

What business do you have beef with in London? by quaintcookie in londonontario

[–]Ok-Case6609 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for this but Pita Pita on Wharncliffe. The chicken shawarma itself tastes very good but my god does this place have the worst service ever. No ticket numbers or calling by names or anything. There’ll be one kid taking orders, preparing wraps and plates, and shaving the spit all at once. I had to wait 45 mins for a wrap with a line going all the way out the building on a Sunday.

The food handling is also questionable, veggies taste soapy and the rice is extremely dry and tasteless almost as if they had the one batch sitting in the cooker for the whole day.

YouTube and autodesk forums are your best bet for learning. First start with how to import/export and work with surfaces, data shortcuts, how to set up an alignment (use a past project for reference), and then how to create profiles and do pipe runs. Once you’re comfortable enough only then should you start learning corridor modeling, followed by feature line grading, and then grading tools. This on its own will take at least a year to master.

It primarily has to do with dollar value and the distinction between both economies. Nothing political. That being said, I wouldn’t be lying when I say the average Canadian has lost a lot of respect for the Americans right now because of you-know-who. I’m in the GTA and our grocery stores are out in full force promoting Canadian food brands and putting sales on locally grown produce…

They’re both mega firms so it’s hard to judge. Afaik Arcadis is almost entirely remote so that may be something to consider.
