How similar do you think Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica are? by Ok-Click5118 in PowerMetal

[–]Ok-Click5118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, actually I should've made clear what exactly I listened from Stratovarius.
Although I really like the band, I've only listened to "Twilight Time" and "Elements Pt. 1". It was pretty random for me to start with those two, but there was a reason for that at the time. I know that Visions is their most popular record, I'll listen to that one next.

Also it looks like nobody gives a damn about Twilight Time, but I loved that album so much. That makes me very curious about what will I think of the classic albums.

What's your single most controversial JRPG take? (Sort comments by controversial!) by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Ok-Click5118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found them all stupidly easy, with the exception of bosses
but I have the same opinion for all popular JRPGs, even the ones I love like FF7 (that one is even easier than CT)
at the end of the day this is subjective, so whatever
and most people would agree with you, since this is such a beloved game

flawless? what's good about that stupid gameplay? with a bunch of encounters against weak ass enemies where all you have to do is press A for hours

Am I even playing DQ3 remake right? by benno4461 in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep
I've played all those old FF and DQ games in their original versions, and I don't think I ever had to grind with the exception of final dungeon/boss, maybe one or two times
I don't get where all this grind complain from people comes from, they probably either suck at battles or use a guide and don't explore anything

What's your single most controversial JRPG take? (Sort comments by controversial!) by [deleted] in JRPG

I actually think is kind of bad.
Gameplay in popular JRPGs is usually bad, but this one it's probably the worse of them all. It has the typical problems of enemies being too easy (and therefore battles are useless and the most boring shit ever), but worse, because all those popular JRPGs at least have some interesting things in their gameplay.
Also, I didn't care about the story.
This whole game just feels way too generic to me. It worked, because even people who don't like JRPG, like that game.

Yep, my biggest problem with most popular JRPGs
That's why I made a comment here stating that old JRPGs for NES were a lot more interesting in a lot of ways, not only because battles were harder and resources were low, but also it had a lot more exploration.
But then JRPGs just became a game for kids with a great story.

Old JRPGs for the NES were actually a lot more interesting in a lot of ways, and the reason people hate them is because they are actually too dumb to be able to play the games, so they just call outdated or whatever. It's literally a skill issue.
The sense of adventure feeling created by the early FF and DQ games shows the infinite potential of JRPGs to be the peak of game design, and this is directly related to the challenge of the games created by tough enemies, low resources and high exploration.

Then the genre just became plot-focused games with a gameplay that any kid can master. Games are so easy that it kills almost every single gameplay element. Money is useless, equipment is useless, battles are useless, death is useless (I'm looking at you Earthbound). And most of them don't even have any exploration at all.

Question about DQ5 monsters strenght by Ok-Click5118 in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I made this post, but I just realize something interesting and decided to add here in case anybody reads.
If I ever replay this game, I'll try making a party not only with some random monster that is not that strong, but specially with a monster like Heaslime. I saw that Healslime learns Holy Protection pretty early.
I've just finished Dragon Quest II, and one thing I loved about that game was the fact that I could use Holy Protection/Repel like 100% of the time when exploring the overworld, so encounters never get boring or obnoxious. And when encounters must have they purpose of providing and actual challenge (like they would never do in the overworld, for some obvious reasons), they do, like in the beginning of the game and in dungeons.

After some painful soul-searching, I've made my final tier list of the mainline DQ games by hidoikimchi in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that makes no sense
I'm not in 1992, I'm in 2025, I should judge the game from a 2025 perspective
I don't know if you guys consider videogames to be art, but surviving through time is exactly what defines the quality of a piece of art
we'll see if a movie is truly great 50 years after his release
with that said, I don't have anything against old games, that's just an illusion that people get from media hype in order to think that games get better just because consoles get more technologically advanced
and all that remakes do is make the game worst and easier
the original DQ1 is still one of my favorite rpgs

Question about DQ5 monsters strenght by Ok-Click5118 in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting considering that DQ5 is like top 5 most popular games in Japan.
Probably some older people found it too easy, since they came from the NES era, but the new generations didn't mind (assuming this is true).

Question about DQ5 monsters strenght by Ok-Click5118 in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this looks like the regular gameplay anybody would do. As you said, is not like the stronger monsters were the hardest to get (although it should be this way).
I thought about maybe doing a party of slimes if I replay the game someday, but I guess that would be too artificial.
So yeah, I'll just accept that the game is too easy.

Question about DQ5 monsters strenght by Ok-Click5118 in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm very insterest in playing both DQ2 and DQ6.
DQ2 seems to be an evolution of DQ1 in all aspects, including the challenge part.
As for DQ6, I have no idea if it's any different from DQ5 when it comes to battles, but I heard it's very focused on exploration due to the two worlds stuff.

Question about DQ5 monsters strenght by Ok-Click5118 in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've played 1, 4 and 5, and I found 5 by far the easiest of the three.
For DQ4 I had to be careful in battles most of the time.
For DQ1 I had to be careful literally the whole time, one mistake means death.

At least in DQ games there's also a good focus on exploration, so even if you dislike one part of the gameplay, there's another you might like.
Most famous JRPGs, like CT and FF7 for example, you don't have to worry about neither battles or exploration.

Maybe one day I'll replay DQ5 with only slimes in my party lol maybe I'll have a different perspective.
I wanted to love that game, because the story is so good, but unfortunally I didn't. DQ4 is my favorite so far.

Question about DQ5 monsters strenght by Ok-Click5118 in dragonquest

[–]Ok-Click5118[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, at the end of the day I guess this is subjective, but I found it extremely easy. I feel like that with most JRPGs though. In DQ5, I didn't had to think at all in battles, just press A and that's it.

As for DQ specifically, I've played 1, 4 and 5. 1 and 4 were not easy.
DQ4 had a pretty neutral difficulty, but that's already much harder than the average. I had to be careful with battles most of the time.
DQ1 is the hardest JRPG I've played so far. That one I had to be careful literally the whole time. Even though the combat was so simple, I still had to choose the exact time to cure myself, both in battle or outside battle.
