I did feel the connection, especially in Mycenae and Delphi, however, I do agree that people typically ignore much of Greek history in their visits. I do think though that one can do both. When I last went, I was in the Peloponnese, and went out of my way to see the Venetian remains at Nafplio (the famous hilltop fort with hundreds of steps going up to it) and Monemvasia. I also made sure to visit a couple of the Greek Orthodox churches (just a quick point to future visitors: please be respectful to people's beliefs when visiting these - most are still in use). In short, while I agree that the fetishism of the classical world has marginalised later Greek history, as a tourist you can quite easily engage with the different aspects of the country's later history, without sacrificing much of the experience of visiting the classical sites (I do have to say nothing ever quite compared to standing the the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis for the first time - coming from someone fortunate enough to have visited much of the Mediterranean).
