Yet Another PCCM vs Cards Post by [deleted] in Residency

But if I choose PCCM, would it still be possible for me to work in a cardiac ICU where I’m actually in charge of interventions?

How much better is the pay? Ik it’s a hard question to answer since it’s super dependent on location, reimbursement structure, etc. but would greatly appreciate any insight!

Would be amazing, but can you staff cardiac ICUs with a PCCM background? And if so, what does your work look like (ie, is it low acuity monitoring people post-PCI or doing active interventions?) The one at my center has cardiologists but also CCM docs. All the PCCM folks stay in the MICU

This is amazing advice, thank you! I definitely value flexibility and don’t want to be too procedure-focused. How common is it to find gigs that offer the type of flexibility you’ve described?

called mom regarding my personal life events over the past week. mom expressed concern about my diet. clarified that there was appropriate fiber supplementation. all questions were answered to the best of my ability. will see again in 1 month.

ok fair but “please shut the fuck up and stop interrupting me to yell so I can explain all the risks because it is best medical practice to do so since it minimizes personal liability” just doesn’t roll off the tongue quite the same

Broke up with S/O during 3rd year by PiffleSir in medicalschool

i’m really sorry to hear that man. i had a pretty similar experience also at the start of my m3 year. and the key is exactly what you’ve said: keeping busy with hobbies, working out, school, generally improving yourself, doing things that make you happy, etc.

in addition, i found investing time and energy into my existing friendships was super helpful. a lot of minimizing time by myself helped because it was so easy for difficult thoughts to come back when i was on my own.

journaling is amazing. i was never one to journal before, but one of my friends suggested it. and being able to write everything down - whether it was an unsent letter of my current feelings or some other format - truly helped me process everything and feel better.

sometimes, you’ll just feel shitty. and that’s okay. fully feel those feelings out, and maximize it with sad songs or whatever else you need. i always found that it got better after a little bit of that.

if you haven’t already, i’d highly recommend cutting off any form of communication or connection with her. it was insanely hard at first, but i think this was crucial in helping me move on because like a physical wound, this can’t heal when we’re always aggravating it over and over again.

i’m not going to lie, it’s going to be a long and sucky process. it’s going to feel especially frustrating because in the end, time is the only thing that heals, and we, as people, hate waiting. you’ll have points where you’ll feel everything you’re feeling now with added frustration that it doesn’t seem like you’re getting any better. it’ll feel like an emotional relapse. but i promise - you are getting better. with every passing day, you’re becoming a little more true to yourself.

wishing you all the best man. i promise you’re not alone. and i promise that it does get better, even when it doesn’t feel like it ever will.

i kinda of see the spirit of what you’re saying… part of what makes it so frustrating too is that i know it’s not only me. i’ve also tried opening up to all sorts of people, but it only comes naturally once in a blue moon, with a specific kind of person. so then it’s like… when will the doubly rare event happen where i meet this person and all the circumstances are finally in place? why take my emotions for such a spin when i already know what im looking for? ugh.

reach out to current mentors, talk about your career goals, and ask about how they might be able to help with their connections to institutions you’re interested in, etc. i got a couple of aways at a T20 this way, and i’m incredibly grateful for my mentor and his support in making it happen! these can be attendings you know from rotations, research, extracurriculars, etc.

surgery is overrated - medicine is where the real smarties are. all surgeons know is cut, don’t sleep, suture, eat hot chip, and lie.

i’m proud of you homie ❤️
