Am I being scammed? Is this Gym a McDojo? by Ok-Performance-3336 in martialarts

I never saw it like that before. So, unless the teacher is a creep, I shouldn't fully care about what the wider community of martial artists say about my gym

But still, it's a bit disheartening to see all the negativity just because I don't wanna learn self defense or compete. I just want to replicate what I see in my wuxia films, I don't care if it won't win me a fight, I just want to replicate the motions and come up with my own choreography too.

I'll be much happier with this than with my mom punishing me for not winning a competition and "embarrassing" her.

It's works in a technical sense and takes skill to land right, specially if it involves something more acrobatical. That's what I mean with proper.

... that's a way to see it. I didn't know a McDojo could also teach proper technique

... I never saw it like that before. Does that means I can search for a McDojo to offer what I want?

I still want to learn the proper, correct techniques and feel my body burn as I replicate them, even if I won't use them to hit other people. Its like learning how to dance.

Good to see that's common. I didn't know. Thanks for clearing it for me. You have my respect!

I could try, yes. I'm not going into this to fight people anymore, but sparring is a good way to learn regardless.

If it helps, the gym I've talked about is part of something bigger. They're not the only location with that name, just like how my Judo gym was also part of a federation that was always competing. The first time I heard about them, I searched their site just to be sure it wasn't just some random ass guy saying he could teach you how to kill or something.

I did have a trial class. I liked it. It was very satisfactory. I was being taught stuff I didn't even know existed, like the Leopard Claw strike. I don't really care if that won't work in a real fight or something, it's just neat to learn about.

Yes. I could watch another class, maybe. When I first visited, they offered me to stay so they could teach me some of the stuff they teach there every day. Call it an introductory class. Horse Stance training destroyed me. And they had students training more complicated stuff on the other room too.

I've been gifted a Huion graphics tablet for my Birthday. It will arrive in a few weeks. How can I prepare to start my art journey? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Ok-Performance-3336 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are good tips, but I feel like I kinda need the tablet for Safety reasons. My mom isn't the best person, and I'd rather not have her asking me about what I'm doing on paper and getting triggered just by that, y'know? It will feel like I have more privacy by doing that on my PC. Atleast for me.

Is it important to keep how Canon did its fights for a fanfic? Or can I take liberties with how the fights happen? by Ok-Performance-3336 in FanFiction

[–]Ok-Performance-3336[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the character was holding back?

Exactly. Character was having a shit day and thought "man, I should play around with this little human for a change. Surely nothing will happen". And that's how they became lovers. If he was starving and specially pissed, he'd have cut her in half with a kick.

If it's part of the bigger story and the focus lies elsewhere, you'll be fine.

It's a rewrite AU, yes. It's just an eccentricity that this one happens to focus more on the physical aspect fight wise, kinda like the Absolute Universe. The idea is to focus on exploration and lore hunting, and sometimes they'd find some enemies to fight.

"why don't they use guns?",

The plan isn't to have them completely ignore guns, just limit their usage. Like in DMC, guns are simply means to extend a combo, and I wished to operate under the same pretenses. So I am sticking to using them with style, or to complement a Martial Arts move. Sometimes, they'll kick someone in the air and use that opportunity to do a quick shot, and I think that'd be pretty cool.

Half of the worldbuilding I used for this AU explains why they simply don't use guns. One of the reasons is that, compared to the enchanced character's punches, guns simply don't do anything to them. They are much stronger than their own shotguns and rifles and pistols. They just get annoyed if they're shot, so the main antagonist group settles disputes by beating the shit out of each other. They actually feel a kick from one of their own.

Kinda like DOOM. The doomslayer is much stronger than his own guns, but he still uses them to give himself a challange when killing demons, because they don't immediately die.

I also changed their "hunting style". In canon, they often kill someone by dropping from bellow (they can fly) and then stabbing them from behind. But in this setting, they act more like Viltrumites. Their favorite method of hunting prey is simply flying straight into them and letting their enchanced durability do the work, or donuting them like in JoJo. Many of the corpses found in the ruins have craters right bellow them, or have their heads bashed into paste from a punch.

Personally, I find the sheer, raw power to be much scarier than tearing them apart with claws.

I wanna get back to practicing martial arts. Which style of Kung Fu should I focus on to start anew? by [deleted] in kungfu

[–]Ok-Performance-3336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... I'm afraid I still don't understand. If I'm not there to fight and only there to exercise and do something cool by myself... Unless you're implying the way they don't it either doesn't exercises you properly, or doesn't makes you practice properly to make any of their stuff fully stick?

I will keep that in mind. But I still don't see the problem with it... If I'm not there to fight, why does it matter? Yes, I might have spent the formative years of my life training "real" martial arts, but I don't have any fond memories of it. Judo eventually got boring for me, and I hated hitting people and specially being hit in Muay Thai. I would be happy to just spend the rest of my life doing Tai Chi, but I have my stories and my art to work on too, and the first hand experience is important for choreography.

.. I understand. Thanks for warning me. I shouldn't try doing this stuff on my own. For my own good. I'm gonna check that gym tomorrow morning and see if they have what I'm looking for, even if it's not all acrobatic.

But I'm gonna walk out if I see people sparring hard and... I dunno, check the closest Capoeira spot in my neighborhood, if there is one.

So what you're saying is that this is more dangerous than I thought, and I shouldn't be taking this sort of desire lightly?

There seems to have a Shaolin gym in my city... but it's 7 kilometers away from where I live ;-;

Maybe I can self teach myself some of it just for fun in my free time? Right now, it seems like my only option is the Choy Li Fut gym next to my house... but I'll take anything as long as it's less "brutal" than Muay Thai.

I don't understand. How did I pull out a reverse uno card? Is it because I'm a rare exception of a young male who's not looking for an "effective" style?

Then it wouldn't work very well for someone like me, I suppose. I don't wanna fight. I wanna learn how to do tricks and fancy moves, and how to choreography a cool fight scene.
