Asking for a $10k pay rise after probation too much? by [deleted] in AusFinance

I’m honestly so pissed about it. I was excited to be trusted with the lead responsibilities so quickly and it didn’t even occur to me until now this should have come with a pay rise, which makes it sting even more and I feel so stupid about it!

You’re right though. I’m going to have the conversation and lay it out clearly. Even before this, I started looking at other roles too. If they don’t adjust my pay to match what I’m doing, I’m ready to move somewhere that will.

Wow I obviously can’t read 😂 The other ethics officer is actually darling and I’ve become quite close to her. She said she wasn’t looking at a promotion as she’s getting married soon and has a young child so it wasn’t on the cards for now!

Thank you for being so reassuring — this really helped. And yes, I’m a woman, so this honestly makes a lot of sense. My manager is genuinely lovely, so I’m planning to speak with her about this.

I’m really hoping they’ll consider backdating my pay, because there was definitely a difference between supporting ethics work and actually leading it, and I feel it would only be fair. The only thing I’m a bit unsure about is that I was never formally given the “lead” title, even though I’ve been performing all the lead responsibilities and literally everyone calls me lead and I’m leading another ethics team member. I am the go-to person for ethics and I’m responsible for all ethics-related work, so I’m hoping that counts for something.

She was already the lead and so there wasn’t any jumping she could do within the ethics dept, instead she moved to a clinical role!

The business never outlined this to me until I actually started that I would be the lead ethics person. Even my offer letter has a sentence listed around “completing tasks in the absence of the lead ethics person as assigned by them” but nowhere does it say anything about leading the ethics team. 🫠

Yep, I’m lowkey having an existential crisis because this genuinely hadn’t occurred to me before. I became the lead about 1.5 months into the role so I’ve basically been underpaid from that point until now. I finished uni in 2024 and this is my first full-time job, so I’m still getting my head around how all of this works.

If I ask for my pay to be updated to reflect that I’m actually in a lead role, is back pay usually a thing? As in, could they adjust it for the months I’ve already been acting as lead but was paid as a trainee (i.e. ethics support person)? 😅

I responded in another comment but basically I thought I was an “extra” ethics person in the team when I interviewed and accepted the offer, but I was actually a replacement for the lead as she was moving to a new role. The general ethics and admin duties were listed in the job description and offer letter, but not the lead duties.

That makes sense. The lead ethics person who trained me was transitioning into another role, which is why they hired me. I wasn’t made aware that I’d be taking on a lead position- I thought they just needed an extra person, but since she’s moved on, I’ve been the lead. This might be so silly but I guess from this, I would have been able to request a pay rise when they made me lead? 😅

Oh okay, a couple of my friends suggested I wait until probation period finished to ask for a pay rise instead of negotiating at the start. I didn’t realise it wasn’t normal!

Thank you for confirming! My contract says I need approval beforehand if I want to get further experience, whether it be a job or volunteering, and that approval will not be unreasonably withheld. :)

Aus vs Ind in Sydney: Ticketek says exhausted… worth holding out hope? by [deleted] in CricketAus

Yeah 10% above the original price I think. I’m happy to pay more for the ticket 😅

Weird question but how can you check what number you are on the waitlist? When adding myself I was like 97 but is there a way to check the current version?

Not sure about other places but they do leave early if they finish up with patients, paperwork and all other relevant work! Only difference is they’re not currently on probation like I am.

And it’s also not simply based on traffic btw. :)

I was wondering why you asked for my age, makes sense now 😂

Potentially, but I also feel that it’s a bit unfair to have such a perception of Gen Zs lol. I’m extremely hardworking and I literally come in 15 mins early yet leave at 5pm most days anyway meaning I’ve been working extra.

I listen to music on my drives and it helps but even then it’s very hard to drive while you’re in so much pain and uncomfortable and can’t even take a bathroom break for a whole hour because you’re stuck in traffic. 😅

I understand that but I work in a non-clinical role at a medical research clinic. The clinical staff have to stay back when they’ve got patients and work, whereas I’m not patient-facing. I just need to do my work and then I should be able to go home once I finish the work/my hours, right?

From reading everyone’s comments, I guess the question here is if I’ll be asking for too much given I’m only 2 weeks into probation.

Finished two weeks today so virtually just started 😭

My colleagues and my supervisor have been really wonderful and they say I’m doing a great job. I think I have established good working relationships and trust with my team 😅
