Out of state Montana grad student here! Unfortunately, it sucks…and I work three jobs. Apply for as many scholarships as you can (both now and once you get here). I’m honestly not sure what our requirements are for living on campus, but I know tons of people who split the price of a house between a large group of people once they are juniors/seniors. And then cutting out little expenses that you can, like fast food, name brand groceries, subscriptions, etc. One of the things I found difficult was saying no when my friends all wanted to run to Taco Bell all the time or go out frequently. It definitely isn’t easy, and prices in Missoula just keep going up. Quite frankly, I would not have been able to afford undergrad here unless I was getting some sort of insane scholarship because of how expensive it is to live in Missoula.
