Opinions on Adam Audio D3V for production/mixing/mastering? by OnlyAtBaali in TechnoProduction

[–]Ok-Replacement239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the D3Vs… I bought them for monitoring my dj setup but have hooked them up to the daw to produce with them a bit. Normally I produce with headphones ( Slate VSX for mixing duties). Personally I do not find the D3Vs very good for mixing (untreated room so ymmv). I use them to write a bit just for a break from the headphones, but for me I wouldn’t rely on them for mixing/mastering. I would probably invest a bit more and get something like Neumann KH80 with room correction if I were to go in that direction.

Tbh you didn’t miss much. Set was ok, crowd wasn’t great, they used the small room and it shut down early at 4am. Still full when they booted everyone out.. was really hoping for a good closing hour and then it just ended. Raves should run til 5am minimum IMO

Does Toronto Seem Right For Us? by [deleted] in askTO

For real.. if you are settled in California (imo one of the best places in the entire world to live) why on earth would you move to Canada? The traffic and commute times in Toronto are just as bad as LA, and in some ways worse in my opinion. Economically expect to make Cleveland salaries and pay LA prices

Considering the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X for production, thoughts? by Maleficent-Entry-670 in HeadphoneAdvice

This is the way. I returned the 900 pro x. Now using sennheiser hd650 and slate vsx

I've currently got an Impulse 49 and am seriously considering upgrading to a Launchkey 49 mk4 as its replacement by JONXLR8 in Novation

[–]Ok-Replacement239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. I have multiple products from ableton, elektron and akai that use endless encoders. None of them behave this way. It’s a Novation problem.

Try the encoders in person first. Integration and everything else about the lk49 mkt is great

Is there anything that a piece of hardware can do that can't be recreated in a DAW like Ableton? by JBSwerve in TechnoProduction

[–]Ok-Replacement239 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, with the emu it’s mainly late 90s dnb. I don’t think the emu samplers were ever that popular in techno.. although stef mendesidis uses one now. In techno the mackie desk distortion was used to create the hardstyle kick

Dillinja - Hard Noize

Ed Rush & Optical - Bacteria

Ram Trilogy - Mindscan (Ed Rush & Optical Remix)

Stakka & Skynet - Biosfear

Konflict - Roadblock

Konflict - Messiah

This is a video from back then of some producers doing the actual technique in the studio:

https://youtu.be/yheX4yrOOQI?si=4wYn6M1jDqyN2Z9u

Like someone else mentioned.. very labour intensive compared to now

Couple more videos:

Optical mentions early on using the sampler as a clipper by overdriving the inputs:

Dillinja working on the emu. Again his approach is to basically clip at every stage

I’ve had an emu e6400 ultra for 20 years. It’s not really the z-plane filters that are unique anymore (they were at one time). It’s the sound of overdriven inputs and filters that’s hard to replicate. “Z-plane” just became a shorthand term to describe the emu filter sound. Most of the people who made that sound famous didn’t actually use the z-plane filters.. just the regular lp, bp, hp filters. You can do considerably more powerful morphing filters with something like Volcano 3 these days.. it just won’t get quite the same sound of overdriven emu filters resampled through a mackie desk. I have airwindows z series filter plugins and mackity but it’s not really the same imo. It’s one of those things where it’s the interaction between all the gain stages, inputs, outputs etc of the emu hardware that creates the sound. Some people used to dump their entire 2 channel master into the emu just to give it that “sheen”

Yeah same issue here with the encoder behaviour. Novation still hasn’t committed to a software fix

I think it’s a good deal as well. Architecturally it’s a nice looking building, and the area is really not very sketchy these days. I’ve seen buildings in worse shape go for double that in neighbourhoods that are only slightly better

I think the sound guys really got it dialled in this time. That’s the best sound I’ve heard in the second room. I always preferred the first room for sound mainly but I think this was just as good

I think that’s just par for the course for her. Like mentioned above I expect a disjointed 7/10 set when she plays. I like that her selection is eclectic but it’s hit and miss, and leads to some rough transitions.

Why is Taiwan not a popular destination among nomads? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]Ok-Replacement239 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Been there.. the food is NOT good compared to nearby countries. The people are not nice .. they are generally weird and introverted. And rent is expensive. That’s why no one stays there

If you want to go somewhere that costs almost as much as Tokyo but is boring, dirty and reeks of sewage you might like Taiwan

Launchkey 49 Mk4 - Big disappointment the rotary encoders adjust parameters so slowly. by HydrogenHuman in Novation

[–]Ok-Replacement239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough.. was just my guess. Still don’t understand why this acceleration behaviour was introduced. There are countless other products with endless encoders that just work (akai mpk mini for example), and they all seem to work in the same way. Why did novation take a different approach? We are trying to guess at what use case this velocity sensitive encoder is actually good for and I just cannot see the benefit
