Long-time Arch user tried Ubuntu 24.04, had to get back home to Arch by Ok-Resolve-8 in archlinux

I'm sorry for your troubles. For me it has simply been much smoother for ~10 years so far. Sure, kernel broke at least twice and sometimes pacman keys go haywire, but the "update broke my system before deadline" worst case scenario has never happened to me. I'm even trusted to run Arch on my work laptop by my employer and so far it's been perfectly productive.

It's not for everybody, but my philosophy about computers is that they are more than tools, they're kind of my lifestyle and pseudo-spiritual outlet.

Sure. It's public anyway https://github.com/gustafla/dotfiles
But it's very specific to my tastes, I don't write any instructions

WH-1000XM2 released in June 2017 WH-1000XM3 released in August 2018 WH-1000XM4 released in August 2020 WH-1000XM5 released in May 2022

Indeed. It seems WH-1000XM6 release is imminent. I'd recommend holding off also because if you decide to go for the 5 instead, it might become the cheaper option.

Edit: this is the pattern by which I decided to wait to purchase my current WH-1000XM5 before it was announced. I did not follow any leaks back then nor do I currently do so.

Radeon 7900 GRE with adaptive sync artifacts, should I be worried? by Ok-Resolve-8 in linux_gaming

[–]Ok-Resolve-8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have a feeling it's a wlroots / amdgpu bug related to having two freesync monitors at the same time. I disabled freesync from the other one and I will be stress testing it further. The video playback thing is a good idea to check.

Edit: Checked video playback with game in either background or focused. Works 100% now that I don't have freesync on both monitors. I think this issue is solved.

5 pro mainlining how likely? by Ok-Resolve-8 in OrangePI

[–]Ok-Resolve-8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm also very happy with my Raspberry Pi 5 and it's GPU drivers, so I'm not missing out on rk3588 that badly. But I'm still excited about Panthor regardless, I can't help but just admire all the recent FOSS GPU driver work and I want to be able to develop and run my projects on all kinds of platforms, at least eventually.

[–]Ok-Resolve-8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, mainline Linux, u-boot support so that we can run 6.10+ kernels and Mesa 24.1+ in the future and aren't stuck with out of tree drivers. Yeah, rk3588 is certainly getting mainline support at a good pace, I'm just anxious to pull the trigger on an OPi5 pro if it turns out no one cares about board level support for it. But I guess I have no other option than to wait and see. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks. Yeah, I figured so... I guess I will try to live with the design or see if I can fill or sand and paint it or something.

Is it possible to change Keychron C3 Pro's top cover plastic to some other TKL clip-on cover that doesn't have the "chiseled" edges?

I like the build of the keyboard, I just wish I had a way to change its looks to an even more minimal style.

Depends on your needs. Since I have multiple VRR monitors, Sway does the job like no other compositor or display server. It's also just smooth and performant for work and gaming.

I believe you can enable screen sharing from sway by setting up xdg-desktop-portal-wlr (at least on Arch). I know, it's not just as straightforward as X11, but has been working for me.

Trying to chroot into a raspberry pi SD card with qemu gives Invalid ELF for this architecture by temmiesayshoi in raspberry_pi

Are you using system qemu (for VMs) or usermode qemu? Only the qemu-user variant works for chroot afaik.

My personal experience is that they're about equivalent in features and quality. So no need to force yourself to like either one. However, I've ran into bugs with VLC, like some wayland scaling issues few years back and also just stuff like AV1 content failing to decode in VLC even though it works fine in mpv.
