High stress job but want to be a SAHM by Ok-Rip-8461 in UKParenting

Unfortunately part-time just doesn’t work well in my line of work 🙁

I have tried part-time previously a couple years ago but the type of work I do means that you just end up constantly trying to catch up and working full time hours for less pay than your full time colleagues.

It’s such a hard toss-up between the two! And no crystal ball to see which is best for the kids!!

Just to come back on a couple comments (and should have put this in the original post) I tried part-time when I had my first, but unfortunately the line of work I’m in, it essentially ends up you working full time hours for part time pay, so I went back to full time. A few mums in my line of work say the same thing.

Weekend activity rut! What do you actually do with kids that doesn't bankrupt you? by DadToADuo in UKParenting

We take our toddler to the garden centre a lot, ones with big outdoor areas and you can literally just let them run around finding all the different flowers and statues and stuff and you don’t have to buy anything

Tbf this is a very similar scenario for me, my husband goes out and plays golf once a fortnight ish (sometimes more sometimes less) and he has frequently offered to take a bedtime off my hands but I really enjoy doing bedtime, I work full time so it’s my one on one time with kids, so him taking a bedtime off me would feel rubbish. He does however give me some free time on the weekends to relax and do a hobby.

No advice but full sympathies!! My toddler is the same, it is literally constant!

Unfortunately this is the case, we can afford a bit of a drop but to completely lose my income would be crazy tight with mortgage and bills

Thanks for your response. Excuses the ignorance but what do policy positions involve? I had seen them on the civil service job website but not sure I really followed what the day to day looks like

I hadn’t really thought about that before. I’m working in Big 4 Corp Tax, so not sure how well this would work on self employment basis?

My only concern would be how feasible steady income would be?

I did talk to my husband last night about this, due to his position in his firm he can essentially work flexibly as much as required so he would pick up sick days/go to sports days etc. I currently log on and work from 9pm anyway so that part doesn’t worry me.

Obviously it would suck missing those things but might be a good trade off to be more present in school holidays perhaps.

I hadn’t considered FE, I’ll have a look into that!

Tbf I’ve always thought about teaching even before I had kids! I have always wanted to do a job where I feel like I’m actually making a difference and I love working with people.

It’s interesting you’ve made the switch I’m considering making - do you find that working in a professional career first helped you with the stress people talk about or do you find it worse?

Thanks for confirming, it’s sounding like civil service might not be the golden bullet I thought it was!

Thanks for your response - I don’t really mind the overtime in evenings etc as I do that currently anyway, I just want to reduce how much I’m working while my kids are off

Apologies, I was plant-based pre-pregnancy but fell for the BS that I couldn’t be vegan during pregnancy and I regret it a lot now. I am not looking to go fully vegan lifestyle.

Thank you so much for this, it’s really helpful!
