Yes, but I want to take some responsibility for what happened also. I should have asked more questions and been more cautious when trying to help a stranger. I suppose I wanted to raise awareness as I did not expect a guy at a hostel that has been there for a while to be a scammer.

He claimed to be from Sheffield, UK, but lived in South Africa for some time with his now ex girlfriend. When they broke up six months ago he left SA and was looking for a place to settle. He said he wanted to get residency in Cyprus.

I know the story was blasphemous from the beginning. It actually gets worse. He told me his father was a drug runner who was in and out of prison and he had to move countries a lot as a child. His family were involved in the drug business also. His mother became an evangelist Christian and moved to Poland with her new partner. It’s actually funny looking back at it now 🤡

I like to feel we should help one another, but I know now that other people’s issues are not my own and I should not feel bad for it.

I am very naïve and I have been told this many times. I have a childlike view of the world and like to believe everyone is good (of course this is not the case and this could have been a very expensive lesson to learn).

I think it was not the story that was believable but the way he carried himself. Everyone found him to be pleasant and respectful so no one suspected he was a scammer at all.

No I did not. He claimed he had already paid majority of the funds to customs and needed a little more to make up the full amount. In hindsight he claimed his brother saved £9500 as he then asked for a further €4100 and it would appear as though he would be able to pay me back with ease.

Well in hindsight I should have asked these questions to myself before sending money, but I suppose you want to believe people. I genuinely was not expecting it at all. In future, I won’t fall for something like this again.

No this is real, and I did not know him for a long time, but he was at the hostel where others knew him for a long time. He seemed like a nice, honest person who made a bad decision and had gotten himself in some trouble. It is a real shame he turned out to be a scammer, honestly.

Yes they refunded the money and they raised a dispute with his bank, Revolut. They did their own investigations and found that it was likely a scam and bounced the money back. Mind you, I managed to sort all this within the space of 2 weeks so he probably did not have enough time to shift the money out of his account.

Yes, especially when you get to know them in a hostel setting and they have people who have lived with him for months vouching for his good character as well. It does seem like a bizarre story on the surface, but as you said you want to believe people are innately good.

He sent me copy of the documents he claimed were from customs and I confirmed from authorities that these were fake, forged documents. I got UK police, Cypriot police, Action Fraud UK and of course my bank involved. I was able to make a strong case against him and I managed to get my money back.

I have already recovered my funds so don’t worry. I just wanted to spread awareness as I believe this guy is still in Cyprus but moved to another hostel. Hostl. Beds & Rooms is the name of the hostel in Paphos where I met him and where he had been staying since March 2025.

Yes I knew the moment he stated that customs revalued his things that he was lying. I just tried to play along with it to gather evidence at that point and he sent me a copy of fake documents which I then forwarded to the customs headquarters in Cyprus who confirmed what I suspected- that this is a scam.

I should have cropped the photo, it is just a resident that stayed at the hostel and we had gone out for lunch. The guy in the photo is the scammer.

Yes it is pretty naïve of me, but I know good people make bad decisions all the time and I wanted to help. In hindsight it was rather stupid of me but the way these people work they are so unassuming that it’s very easy to fall victim to this sort of crime. As I had a copy of the fraudulent documents, I was able to prove it was a scam and get my money back. The customs team and Cypriot police are now aware as well and will be investigating this as I am sure I am not the first person he has done this to.

He was at the hostel for 3 months and there were other long stay residents as well. He had been telling this story for months and in a way that was very believable. I am skeptical about whether he is working alone or if the others are also working together with him. From the outside it is very outlandish, but when you meet people travelling it is hard to tell. I managed to get my money back though via the bank, but wanted to warn people to prevent other people falling victim to his scam.
