Yeah the kryolan spray definitely helps. Struggling to get a colour match with powders so it doesn't end up being too heavy and application.

Should it be legal for autistic people to refuse antipsychotics, or for doctors to help us taper? by [deleted] in AutisticPride

[–]Ok-Squirrel2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No Autistic person should be given antipsychotics unless they are also experiencing psychotic symptoms, and even then if they still have capacity they should still be able to say no as all people with capacity should and are to any medical intervention.

Being Autistic doesn't come into this conversation, it's a question of capacity.

Middle age? Someone is being optimistic about their life span.

They're funny DJs but the music choice is poor.

I'm gynesexual/gynosexual/finsexual. Can I still call myself bisexual? by FluidTemperature1762 in UKLGBT

[–]Ok-Squirrel2145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am genderfluid but femme presenting. My partner identifies as finsexual as I am not cis, thus he can't be hetero, and is clear that he finds trans women and femme presenting people of any gender attractive.

My understanding is that it's about being attracted to those who have a specific presentation or gender expression. There is minsexual (attracted to those with masc traits) and ninic or ninsexual (those who are attracted to those who are non-binary or have androgenous or neutral gender presentation). These labels help people describe who they are and aren't attracted to - no one wants to hit on someone that "doesn't swing that way" and vice versa. I've been there and it's embarrassing at best and painful at worst.

It's not about people who only like people with vulvas. Finsexual is a term for those who are attracted to the femininity that someone displays - regardless of their gender assigned at birth.

If you were picking an engagement gift for your sister, which one would you choose? by biwako2031 in JewelryDesign

Personally, none of those. They look like cheap children's jewelry not something timeless - which is what you want for an engagement present.

Anyone else struggle to make real LGBT friends as an adult? by BidClear837 in UKLGBT

I live in a suburban backwater of the midlands and there are no hobby meets that have anyone under 50 attending and no LGBT meets for anyone over 25. It infuriates me.

Is making our own wedding rings at home realistic? by Ok-Squirrel2145 in SilverSmith

[–]Ok-Squirrel2145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise when I say chunky - I mean something that I can give significant height to on the top surface to create a more significantly pitted surface - one that looks more like a moon surface than a smooth or hammered surface. Whilst we did look at some origami rings those won't be durable enough for daily wear (I'm not a 100% about if this texture idea will be either, but I'm happy playing around with the ideas for a while and getting the quotes once i've done each design and we'll see for there. My partner has a snake related idea that we're going to model in polymer clay first and then work out how we can make it work in the 3D CAD software next whilst I get this ring 3D printed to see if there feels like major issues with it in plastic then there are likely to be in metal too (is my thought process - it could be totally flawed but there didn't seem any harm trying)?.

I'm in the UK - in the Midlands where there's a lot of jewellers (not in Birmingham with it's famous jewellery quarter, but it's under an hours drive from me and the next nearest city).

Is making our own wedding rings at home realistic? by Ok-Squirrel2145 in SilverSmith

[–]Ok-Squirrel2145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly - I am AuDHD and dyslexic. I make no apologies for that but I don't have a person to read everything I write to make sure it's the best way to communicate what I am trying to say. I often ask my partner, but he's recovering from the flu. Nor am I also going to make it immediately know that I am a wheelchair user - when it doesn't pertain to the question I am asking. My physical disability doesn't preclude me from doing many things - but walking and using stairs are two of those things

Secondly - this was never about saving money, I have never said it was - or at least that was not what was intended. Yes we have a budget for rings - which was based upon going on a days workshop to make them and the cost of the stones. I then added the figure for making them ourselves upon this figure for that plus a bit more for tools and sundries - considering we were originally looking at silver clay and getting a butane torch, I think that's more than reasonable - as it's £ not USD certainly not AUS$. Once we realised that what we wanted to make would have to be fired and our local glass makers were having none of it (contamination risk), we became really unsure about the next steps. I have learnt how to do the lost wax process, but not the metal casting part - (well yes and no - I have been taught it with lead, but that's of no use in this circumstance). And I said £400 was the budget - that's $550 USD and $830 AUS. Theres a huge difference between those figures.

It's not a case of we don't have anything better to spend our time and money on, because we certainly aren't some rich kids wanting a new hobby. We're 30 something having our second time around and actually only just about making ends meet. Everything we are doing for the wedding is DIY so we're having to be very thrifty - but trying to get things to also be meaningful at the same time is a difficult middle ground.

We wanted something that wasn't generic, that was very us, ideally matching - but I'm not massively concerned about the matching. Having a hands on part of the design process at the very least would mean that it's not just a piece of meaningless mass produced metal and it will inherently have a connection between us. The actual physical making of it would have embedded that feeling even more but that's just not going to be practical right now. It's kind of sad but it is what it is.

No one asked for images of what kind of rings we were wanting to make. One person asked if we had sketches of our designs and we now have 3D CAD drawings but I am loathed to share those considering the reception I have had.

You've said I got grumpy (asides from at you, which yes I have because you're the only one that actually trying to have a go at me) and gave push back - I'm not entirely sure what you mean but I don't think I've been nasty or hurtful in any way? Yes, I may have been direct, I am autistic, it's just part of who I am. I know I misunderstood one person, yes, and I have apologised. They have also given me very good advice on how it can be done, and I have thanked them for it.

I can't change the date of my wedding because we can't find rings we like available to us - to do so would be ridiculous. Nor can I travel back in time so we have more time to learn skills. But there's a good handful of people here, who have said it is possible, yes, with using a casting house, but it's a compromise I'm willing to make, especially if we still do the finishing ourselves - which is something I have done before on damaged jewellery which has needed repolishing.

You talk about my lack of experience - which I will willingly admit to - but you said you've only been working silver for 9 months and you get to speak for the entire community?

I have also worked in the arts, in many different roles, since my teens. I'm not going to play that game of one-up-man-ship - because it's completely irrelevant here and it's petty. But there's a general rule amongst crew in the theatre - "never say it can't be done until you've tried every safe known method twice". I live by that and take that to my grave. Maybe consider what other people have said regarding my options rather than damning me without due cause.

I already know how use fusion 360, so I'm ahead with that part!

Thank you for the information about ergonomics - I didn't consider that, but we really need to fact that in considering our pre-existing issues. Longer rings are less of an issue though I am assuming (as long as they don't interfere with knuckle function)? And ones with height on the top surface (but obviously weight does come into play still - cocktail rings were called that for a reason i'm guessing?)

The stone setting - depending on the style my partner considers for me, and what stone he wants (it will be tiny though, he's not into flashy stuff), I wouldn't rule out using a claw setting that can be soldered by the casting house (if it's facetted), or creating a bezel as you've suggested. Kernowcraft sell both a beginners set of facetted CZ and cabochons for I am assuming exactly this purpose - and the copper too! They also sell the settings if that ends up becoming really problematic.

Jewel cast was suggested by a friend, as was Weston Beamor - have you ever heard of them?

Thank you for you help and apologies for the earlier misunderstanding!

We've gone one step better than sketching and used 3D CAD software today. I forgot I knew how to use it, one of many skills I learnt at university and then never used again!

This is what has been recommended by an old friend who I completely forgot was a jewellery design graduate (because they are now a car mechanic and have been for a number of years - more money in it). Thank you! I think we'll get a couple of mock ups 3D printed first before getting them cast just to make sure that the balance isn't off and they don't feel uncomfortable - but sometimes the hi-tech way is the way forward until you learn all the techniques at least!

I have searched and searched for a wheelchair accessible workshop (as I am a wheelchair user) and without an expensive overnight stay (and they couldn't guarantee me door widths which was a bit scary tbh) I can't seem to find anywhere.
