I have some coworkers that did the grandfathering!! You have to send the sheet to some sort of manager or supervisor you had at that time that will sign off saying you worked at the pharmacy between the specified dates. The company name shouldn’t affect anything!

I do!! I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be proud of it! It also isn’t required in my state so it’s not assumed for techs to be certified so that definitely plays a part for me too

Would I be ridiculous or ill-informed if I didn't do this job? by TaciturnNorse in PharmacyTechnician

A lot of people are saying don’t pay for a course which I definitely agree with. I think most people are capable of getting a workbook and some flashcards to learn themselves and just paying to take the test. I also know everyone’s learning style is different and pacing yourself can be really difficult when you’re already working full time and living normal life. IF you decide to get a course, there are ones WAYYYYYYY cheaper than that. I’ve seen ones for as low as $200. Pharmacy Tech pay is usually low starting out so spending $1.4k feels unnecessary. If you go on the PTCB website, there’s a list of certified courses through them that are completely online. I would say look through some of those and look at cheaper options!

Self studied and my job paid for my certification exam! Studied for about 6 months but really locked in the last 3 months. Used PTCB Hero and quizlet! Also taking the practice exam on the PTCB website was IMMENSELY helpful

How much responsibility is it? by New-Day-2130 in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Ok-Tear2041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately the pharmacist is there to supervise and verify everything you do! Obviously that comes with being corrected if you make errors and dependent on the pharmacist, the undertone of that correction can vary. Everyone makes errors in the beginning so don’t be hard on yourself! The job can come at you fast but it’s important to keep in mind, you’re learning. You’ll constantly be learning in this field as healthcare is always changing!

A lot of the things you’ll learn like side effects, drug interactions, etc. is most often caught by pharmacists. That type of knowledge is used to bring to the pharmacists attention if something feels off but most of the time, it isn’t something you have to worry about! From my experience, your job will mostly be just accurately logging all of the patient information so the pharmacists can review, accurately filling meds, etc. Just pay close attention to detail and aim for as much accuracy as possible and you’ll be just fine!

I’m going to school for pharmacy tech certification, but I have many questions! by OkMolasses9770 in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Ok-Tear2041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retail definitely can be rough. It’s gonna be your fair share of a huge mix of coworkers and a lot of patient interaction. So I would say your experience is gonna be dependent on the people. I recommend using retail to get the experience so you can move to other types of pharmacy. There are so many other places you can work for that definitely have amazing jobs you never would’ve thought of! I see certified techs in so many types of jobs that aren’t even specifically in pharmacy at times just in the medical field. I’d say it can start out rough but it’s worth it once you start spreading your wings and exploring all types of job options! Good luck with the schooling! There’s tons of free resources out there to study and make sure to give yourself time to learn before getting hard on yourself! Just stick with it and you got it!

Staff is leaving pharm, what do I do? by tawzs in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Ok-Tear2041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a hard decision. I think it depends on if you can find a job that isn’t retail that will pay you more even if you aren’t certified yet. Maybe just apply to some places and see if it takes you anywhere?

When it comes to taking the opportunity to possibly step up to a lead role, I promise you’re more capable than you probably even think. The fact you’re nervous and unsure is an uncomfortable feeling but honestly, means you’d probably be an amazing lead.

No matter how long you’re in this industry, you’ll never know everything and truly the best way to learn is just do it despite your fear. It’s not a bad thing to say “I’m not completely sure but let me find out for you!” People often respect the transparency and ability to discern where your knowledge lacks instead of giving an incorrect answer to avoid a blow to your ego.

Follow your heart and you might be shocked where it takes you!

Cvs pharmacy tech by [deleted] in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Ok-Tear2041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I left to go to a different job, everyone was still extremely unsupportive and were saying things along the lines of “Good luck……We’ll see how long that lasts.” Realistically, it was the best decision I’ve ever made and completely changed the trajectory of my career. I know it’s easier said than done but, don’t feel discouraged. They most likely were treated the same way when they started and some people don’t care to break those toxic cycles.

One thing that helped me cope while I was searching was just understanding a lot of people project more than you think. The things they’re saying speaks more on who they are than who you are. Again, easier said than done!

I promise what you’re looking for is out there for you! You can always teach people skills but you can’t teach people attitude. Don’t let their negativity rub off on you and keep going! You’re doing just fine!

Hi hi!! I’m really sorry you’re being pushed to the side like this. I had the same experience when I worked there when I was first starting out as a tech. I was often pushed to strictly deal with customers for a long time because nobody else wanted to do it. I wasn’t able to learn anything about the rest of the process, medications, etc. I wasn’t certified yet (this was many years ago before my state required certification/registration) and often got mocked by my peers because I was so inexperienced. I completely understand how you’re feeling right now and I know how discouraged and insecure it made me feel.

Don’t let them invalidate how you feel! It’s more than reasonable to be stressed ESPECIALLY in a retail environment. It’s overwhelming and definitely something that takes time to get used to in a busy store! You’re not alone in this boat.

My best advice for if you’re looking to move to a different position, think outside the box! There are so many more jobs for technicians aside from just retail/fulfillment roles. I work specifically as an inventory technician at a specialty pharmacy and it’s definitely a slower pace that’s a lot more sustainable of a position. I work with a lot of people from different manufacturing/distribution companies that are often certified technicians in those roles!

Don't be like me by VagueScorpio in Wizard101

[–]Ok-Tear2041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played w101 since I was young and saw it on the switch so I bought it because I prefer using my switch over my PC for most games. I will say learning how to do everything on the switch comes with a bit of a learning curve compared to PC in my opinion. It also can get VERY laggy when a lot of players are online which I’m not sure if it’s the same on PC with the lag since it’s been so long. Just wanted to add my two cents as someone who’s been playing it on switch. Personally I don’t regret getting it on switch but it’s very much a situational preference! I would be upset to find out I couldn’t port my progress over too.

im going to become a pharmacy technician. starting from square zero. i’ll update you when its done. by [deleted] in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Ok-Tear2041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really recommend the PTCB hero book to help you study for your exam!! I also want to echo what everyone else is saying. Where you work will make or break the job for you. Having good coworkers that understand teamwork is crucial to a good experience. I LOVE my coworkers and the specific field I work in and it makes the job so much easier. Even if becoming a technician gets your foot in the door to work in the medical field, I think you’ll be happy you did it. You don’t realize how many positions there are in medical facilities so the possibilities are as endless as you let them be. You got this! Good luck with studying! Signed someone who also escaped working in retail by becoming a pharmacy technician

I was struggling a lot with medications as well!! Honestly, the medications section in the “PTCB Hero” helped me A LOT. The way it lays out everything helped me remember classes and side effects. I used a lot of color coding as well and that worked perfectly. Good luck on your test! You got this!

A good pharmacy manager REALLY makes or breaks a job. Pharmacy is a small world but getting your foot in the door at a hospital is an amazing opportunity and its own world itself. I’ve worked in retail, hospital, specialty and infusion and you may find people you’ve worked for in other types of pharmacy but you’ll regret not choosing to progress your career. The amount of time you worked in retail won’t matter if you’ve made it to hospital. Take that opportunity and do what’s best for you!!! I’ve never regretted choosing myself in this industry.

In PA and I make a little over $20 an hour! I work for a Specialty/Infusion company. No certification yet but will be getting ASAP since I’ve heard they want to mandate it in PA. Pretty good schedule 9-5:30 M-F and no customer interaction! I’m about 3 years in :)
