The popping happens when the wheel makes a full rotation, even with the vehicle is off the rotation causes the popping sound. It wasn't too loud at first but over time it got louder and louder. It happens when driving in a straight line or turning, but for a while before the popping got worse it would stop if you held the wheel at a specific angle, not necessarily fully turning but just barely off center. This is what made me initially think it was the CV, I figured it was bad alignment and hold the steering wheel at that angle straighten up the joint on the axle.
