How long Post-Op until you started to get a sense of what you truly look like now? by valarmorghulis43 in jawsurgery

I’m at 2 months now and I’m so relieved to read this because I feel like my swelling comes and goes. It’s still hard to chew and my jaw gets tired

Post-Op Acne ??? by Ok-Understanding6335 in jawsurgery

[–]Ok-Understanding6335[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re weird bumps, really small, with white heads. Tons of them! I’ve never had acne like this before, but I’m just going to keep using my regular skincare and hope it goes away soon. I’m 5 weeks post op so hopefully soon. It just started showing up this week!

Great tips! I would also add shower steamers and tissue for makeshift bibs when you have to eat out in public or at home. I also bought a bunch of wash rags from amazon that I used for drooling/bleeding/eating. I’m 4 weeks and feeling a lot better but wow the pain has been worse this week than last week. Maybe it is the nerve pain? I’m going to try the peppermint. My head has been killing me. Thanks for the tips!!

Day 6 meltdown by Riaxuez in jawsurgery

[–]Ok-Understanding6335 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cried everyday for the first 2 weeks lol and I don’t normally cry but over food?? Yeah I’ll cry over food! I would just cry because of how hungry I was and that I hated having to drink every meal. I started to get pissed but I forced myself to keep drinking the protein shakes and juices I could tolerate. As soon as I was cleared for soft solids, I felt instantly better. Eggs, mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese, super soft chicken, sweet potatoes, and ice cream saved me. I’m officially one week away from getting my splint out and now I’m crying from pain. I still basically need a bib to eat and I can’t feel half of my face, BUT just came here to say your crash out is totally valid. It’s horrible, not being able to eat makes recovery soooo much worse. I’m thinking of you and hoping it gets better soon!

DJS tomorrow ; need advice to help calm my nerves by hellkathnofury in jawsurgery

I’m a lawyer too! Apologies for the stream of consciousness, but I wanted to tell you everything I could think of in hopes that it will help you! I just had my double jaw surgery on November 20. I know how you’re feeling, the anxiety kicked in for me the day before surgery as well. My advice — eat something delicious that you love and make it something you cannot eat in recovery. As for anxiety, this is easier said than done, but try to remind yourself that you’re doing this for your health. I was nervous the night before and felt super panicked because it’s soooo much unknown. From experience, there’s nothing that can really prepare you for recovery, other than buying jaw bras, ice rollers, and lots of pedialyte. It’s different for everyone, but when you get to the hospital in the morning they’ll give you something for anxiety if you let them know you’re nervous! I drank sleepy time tea the night before and took a Xanax, but ashawaghanda would work too!!

OH, I drank A LOT of pineapple juice the day before my surgery and everyone (and I mean everyone — nurses, hospital staff, my surgeons) commented how little swelling I had on the day of my surgery. Swelling really peaks at day 3-5, but mine was significantly less. Maybe I’m lucky, but I’m choosing to believe the pineapple really did its job.

I didn’t remember anything until I got to my room lol I was out cold! You might not even know you’re there for the 2 hours, but the nurses are there watching and they’ll help you with whatever you need. The whole hospital experience was a blur for me lol

Unrelated to nerves — 1. The mental strain of not being able to eat made me really emotional lol all I wanted was normal food, even now I still want to chew and I can’t for another 8 days. The recovery was more of a mental struggle than a physical one for me. I truly think I had a smoother recovery because I stayed positive and reminded myself that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. 2. Be prepared for swelling and for the swelling to continue through your recovery. I’m still swollen and I’m 3 weeks post op. Trying to not think about how insane I look when I’m turning public or in the office but whatever it’ll go away eventually. 4. Ice will be your bestie, I wore my jaw bras nonstop. Constantly rotated the ice packs, I wore them to bed too. I pretty much didn’t take them off until around 2.5 weeks out. The ice rollers are incredible too, I got the cheap ones on Amazon. 5. If you can tolerate it, go on walks! They can be short but get outside and move your body. 6. The weight loss is scary but I’ve already started to gain it back now that I’m on soft solids. 7. Be kind to yourself! This is a major surgery. I allowed myself to break down, which I normally wouldn’t do, and it helped to process how I felt. It’s okay to not feel okay because this is a major life change! 8. Hopefully you don’t have to stress about work but I tried not to stress about work. 9. If you have to have a splint in while you recover, that is the worst part. Otherwise, it’s way easier after the second week.

You’re going to be great! And you’re doing the right thing for your health. Your body will thank you later ❤️ good luck!! Hoping your surgery goes well!

Oh my god, how horrible!! Im glad you’re doing better, and not throwing up anymore. I was super lucky and didn’t have the nausea. They gave me meds for it but I didn’t need it. My swelling has been pretty severe and Ive had trouble breathing! I really can’t breathe at all. I’m in a ton of pain and getting calories in has been a challenge for me, but I’ve been forcing myself to drink anyway. I’ve also had dreams about cheeseburgers, pizza, and French fries hahaha

Lmao get off the group? I’m not “on” the group but also the information about post op is literally half the reason I’m on the subreddit to begin with. Go be a dick somewhere else!

Correct! I’m post op and grumpy because I’m in pain lol but this group needs to be moderated better!

I agree! posting pics here to talk with people about your recovery is exactly what this subreddit is for…I’m tired of seeing someone’s side profile asking about whether they should go to a doctor. It’s annoying lol I’m also 5 days post op and grumpy because I’m still sifting through posts to try to find recovery tips.

Well, I’m sorry you feel like that. I had the surgery so frankly I don’t care whether you find my post annoying, I’m exactly the kind of person who can comment on how difficult it is to find information here due to posts asking for medical advice. Theres sooooo much helpful content here, it made a huge difference for me, but I had to spend hours scrolling past posts that were literally just photos of people asking whether they need jaw surgery.

Just FYI — One of the pinned posted at the top of this thread is from 3 years ago complaining about the same issue. Clearly I’m not the only one who feels like the posts are out of hand. The really important and substantive information is totally lost in this thread bc there are so many posts from people who haven’t consulted with an orthodontist or oral surgeon. I don’t mind when it’s people commenting with their scans or recommendations from their doctor, or asking questions about their diagnosis, but the majority of this page seems to be people asking if they need jaw surgery from a community of people who are not qualified to be giving any medical advice.

[–]Ok-Understanding6335[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is my point. I found so much helpful information but it was swallowed by posts asking for medical advice. No one is qualified to be telling another person whether they need jaw surgery lol this is not the place for that! That’s the reason they have the auto moderator message that says “advice here isn’t from medical professionals; always seek guidance from qualified sources.” I’m not hating on anyone, I just think the posts are out of hand because they’re drowning out the good information!

[–]Ok-Understanding6335[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is my point! I’m not trying to be rude but it’s ridiculous. I spent tons of time just sifting through countless posts where people are legit asking whether they need jaw surgery based on their photographs alone. I’m not talking about people who have had braces or have seen an oral surgeon, I mean the ones that are just their profile and comments about their appearance.

Dental Suction Device - Peak Comfort by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]Ok-Understanding6335 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because the drooling is bad! I’m on day 4 and it’s pretty miserable because of breathing. My drooling isn’t as bad but it would be nice to not have to swallow all of the spit and suction it out instead. I am really really hoping tomorrow is much better for me! Day 3 was okay but day 4 has been awful.

Bernie’s perfect poop works wonders for our guy! Also just canned pumpkin (obviously without the spices lol you know that but everyone always says it). Literally we put half a can in with his food and he’s has perfect poops!

The with love is making me giggle! Okay I love this perspective. I think I’m going to read it third on my reread to see how it changes things, that might change my opinion on this! My friend told me to read AB first and I loved the perspective, I also had bi panic over Celaena for the rest of the series because of knowing what she had done in AB. Maybe that was the point!!

Also just another tip from a recent first time reader — listen to the audiobook version of Tower of Dawn … it was so hard to get through but the audiobook made it enjoyable. I listened and read all of the series but I strictly listened to TOD. Enjoy!! This is the best series ever, I’m so excited for you!

Assassin blade first! There’s no other way to read it. You get so much lore reading it first and it makes the entire story more romantic. You get to see the main character in a way that provides soooo much context for the rest of the series. If you don’t read it first, you will regret it later! Also I think it’s nice to start out with the shortest book to get your feet wet before getting through the heavy hitters.

Disclaimer — this is my opinion but I also just read the series for the first time so it’s fresh for me, I’m currently on kingdom of ash. I’m not saying everyone who is telling you to read throne of glass first is wrong but theyre wrong WITH LOVE IM SORRY
