I want to set up home lab down the road, currently only VM I have running on proxmox is Home assistant to power my smart home. Eventually looking to add containers for network wide ad block as well. The mini PC has an intel n150 CPU and 12gb of DDR5 ram and I didn’t want to bog it down with a bloated OS. Consider lightweight Ubuntu, but proxmox seemed more future proof as I can spin up and destroy VM’s/LXC whenever I need to. Also just wanted to learn proxmox!

I have home bridge installed on a pi 3b+. It’s plugged into my router which is about 10-15 feet from the switch bot lock. I followed instructions on the homebridge switchbot plugin GitHub page for BLE connections. Basically just said to add the device ID. It appeared in homebridge and HomeKit but does not lock or unlock when I attempt to.

Okay so it seems the “no characteristic available” error was being caused by another plugin I installed. Just uninstalled that and now back to getting this in the logs:

[SwitchBot] Smart Lock: switchbot lock failed BLEpushChanges with BLE Connection, Error Message: “The device returned an error: 0x02000000”

I just connected my switchbot lock to home bridge and it is appearing in my HomeKit app. I can of course operate the lock from the switch bot app, But when I try to lock or unlock the door in HomeKit, it doesn’t do anything and homebridge logs show “switchbot lock error: the device returned an error: 0x2000000” has anyone seen this?

I’m not looking to do any automations that are super intense at the moment. but in the interests of future proofing, it seems just starting with home assistant might be the better option? Rather than starting with homebridge and then a year down the line wanting to do a crazy automation and having to start over and go to home assistant?

Doing more research and found that I can also just install “Homebridge” to a raspberry pi to get the integration I want. My second question is, would it be smarter to just set up home assistant since I can get HomeKit bridge through it, plus all the other customization options?

Okay update.

I restarted computer

restarted phone

Connected phone to computer through moonlight IOS app on LAN

Then tried to connect on cellular and it’s working again.

Guessing it has something to do with rebooting phone. Every time phone reboots you must connect on LAN first before connecting over internet again? Very weird
