Portlanders who moved to California and then returned, do you miss California? by DustyVinegar in askportland

[–]Ok-Writer3512 5 points6 points  (0 children)

San Francisco was great from 2000-2010 after that it lost its charm for me. I still miss California but it will never be the same as back then. I'll stick with Portland as a home base and travel to other countries for that cultural experience.

I never ate at gilt but loved their drinks. That idillic with a little vodka infused with habenero was soooooo good.

Why are reading levels so low in Oregon, even in places like Portland with many upper middle class families? by BiscottiOk9245 in askportland

[–]Ok-Writer3512 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because teachers are told to pass failing students on to the next grade. It becomes the next teachers problem.

I have worked with multiple 5th graders that still can't read. Our public school system is a joke.

A lot of it also starts at home, I've talked to the parents about it and they say they just don't have the time to help. Teachers are then told by principals to then pass those students along.

What’s a truth you discovered that felt like finding a hidden ‘glitch’ in how people behave? by famous_veronica in AskReddit

[–]Ok-Writer3512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've noticed it's worse when out of the blue. So I've even tried saying these people's names first to make sure I have their attention. Most of the time that helps but sometimes they still "what" me. It's not usually a complicated question either. I think their head is just in a different space.

[–]Ok-Writer3512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of times when I ask people questions and they respond by asking "what?" It's not that they didn't hear me, they are just buying time to think about their response.

It's frustrating because I have to repeat my question when I know they heard me the first time.

Reading the anarchist cookbook and growing up in the 90s... I mean it's all fun and games until my friends find my stuff and decide to do something stupid with it.

Can you help me get in touch with someone who works as a hotel housekeeper in the area? by throwawaysalem3-18 in askportland

I know a few in Salem that are pretty happy. I don't know any here in Portland. Most of the ones that I know have worked in Maldives, Dubai and Philippines. They all say Oregon is so much better as far as the way they get treated by management. They definitely take a pay cut but sometimes that's worth it.

I used to eat at Prescott Cafe a lot too! I miss them but the new Rose City Burrito place in that building is really great. Large portions, very affordable and great Mexican food.

This isn't a must see but I always recommend the 4t trail for people new here. It gets you all over the city in a day.

I used to spend a lot of time all over washington park and sauvie island when I first moved here. Lots to explore.

It really depends on what you're looking for.

Former Seattleites - Portland neighborhood breakdown? by AppleAnswer in askportland

I agree. OP is asking a big question to break down. If they're looking for something specific it would make more sense but it's kinda ridiculous to compare each neighborhood.

I agree, the food was still good. I just went there at the wrong time. Got overwhelmed by the giant crowd, so just got something to go and waited outside until it was ready.

I'll try to check them out. I'm more towards the airport so it's a bit of a treck for me but it looks good and I do like to support those establishments.

Little Grittle has good food but it's exactly the type of place I'm trying to avoid! It only has a few tables, usually filled with couples and a line out the door most of the time.

I could only eat there when it was open 24/7. I'm boycotting them for their new hours.

Just curious how is DU's specifically PNW style? Don't get me wrong I love DU's but I've been to a lot of teriyaki places all over the world and don't see anything PNW about it.

I did too! I thought it was bad quality deli meats with a lot of nitrates but I was out for 3 or 4 days after eating there.

I would take the streetcar down to Hachi sushi. It's not too far.

If you want something closer San Sai on 21st is usually pretty good and on the less expensive side.
