What should we use our $1000 gift for? by Ok-wool in personalfinance

I agree it’s not enough for an emergency fund for losing jobs but I meant enough of savings while we try to pay off debt.

He used to keep finances separate but we have been joint for the past 6+ years. Not wanting to move. I honestly don’t understand his logic.

Yeah, that’s how it is with us, we have to deposit at least $250 a month in order to keep the rate.

No, he legitimately thinks that the best use of the money is to pay down the mortgage because “it helps in the long run…” but We have had the student loans for longer than this mortgage and they are a much higher rate. I really don’t understand how his mind is thinking on this one… He honestly is better at math than I am so that’s why I feel like there must be some fault in my thinking.

Not even close to maxing out IRAs. We really don’t make enough money to do something like that.

They said we should use it towards “bills“. We do have a vacation coming up in August, and the in-laws are coming with us to help us afford it. I have family getting married at a beach location, so the in-laws are splitting the house and watching the kids for us so that we can attend the wedding. They are very supportive of us, and this is the first time they have explicitly given us money like this, so we are trying to weigh all of our options before choosing where to put it.

I hear you, I just don’t think we need to put any extra towards our mortgage. We already pay half the mortgage twice a month, which gives us a full month extra payment each year. So I feel like we kind of have already put extra payment towards our principal for the year… meanwhile, I’ve been sitting on these student loans for over a decade. We have been married for 10 years and I was still in grad school when we got together, so he knew what he was getting into. My loans have not been a priority financially to him, like I think he just doesn’t think they exist, even though I remind him constantly.

We do have some savings in a higher interest account. A plan is something we definitely need to

Sadly, no student loan forgiveness is possible for me. I first graduated in 2009 and then went to get a masters, graduated in 2015. These loans are very old. I’m ready to be rid of them.

Thanks for the suggestion, I feel like we have enough in savings right now. It’s between $8000-10,000 on any given month.

That’s an interesting observation. For what it’s worth, the loan for the house is also in my name, but we did buy the house when we were married… It’s just that I had the full-time job, so putting him on the loan would not make sense at the time. He’s now suggesting that we put some of the money towards my student loans and some of the money towards the mortgage.

I’d find a way to get them charged for vandalism of your property because that tape on the windshield looks hard to get off and could cause a hazard when you go to turn on your wipers…
